    Poor dave. The 11th hour rte 2 now. A man who once seemed to care about music now interviewing the epitome of MOR, James Blunt. And featuring a slot on Lily Allen. Whored himself out for a bit of tv fame. I know he used to do it before on early morning tv but he still had his music based radio show then and had the good grace to be caught calling boyzone ****e when he thought he was off air. Poor Dave.

    i was never much of a fan of dave fanning to be honest. his so called broad taste in music was quite narrow and conservative compared to the mighty john peel. peel would play, american hardcore, african folk, german techno, english indie, swedish grindcore and death metal, dub reggae etc etc. fanning would play whoever was on the front cover of the No Metal Express. and u2 of course. oh and ****in lenny kravitz. oh and last but not least his old mate joe elliot's band def fricken lepperd.

    oh and he is not a fan of the john landis directed musical car chase comedy movie otherwise known as the blues brothers. landis is a god.

    I would be deeply suspicious of anyone who didn't like the Blues Brothers. And true enough noone hold a candle to John Peel. His fawning (fanning) over U2 can be sickening. I wonder how much his playlist were curtailed by rte though. Theres no doubt he loves music but can be very disregerding of anything he considers bad.

    fanning never played anything too extreme, aggressive or noisy, no late 80's post hardcore noiserock except for the usual suspects sonic youth/dinosaur jnr/pixies. when i tune into a show that plays alternative rock/pop i wanna hear the real deal. never got to hear god bullies, killdozer, melvins, earth, halo of flies, pussy galore, big black etc etc

    He is totally under utilised by Rte. where's the surprise there ?
    I think he is alright. He does play some good stuff from time to time. He is obsessed with Bob Dylan and John Lennon though.........perhaps not a bad thing !
    I don't think he rates U2 anymore though........I mean you can really tell from his underwhelming voiceover ads for their new record.

    His Film review show was good. His planet rock profiles are good.......except when he has to interview tw@ts like Blunt etc.
    Pity Rte see fit to stick him on at ridiculous times.
    :cool::cool::cool:
    Blues Brothers was uber cool. I think Dave just doesn't like to go with the masses sometimes.

    He's a tosser. Used to listen to his show and he'd often stick some obscure 15-20 minute track on before the news, presumably because he wanted to put his feet up and do f-all for 30mins per hour.

    I don't know exactly what his music taste is but he'd have a fairly strict playlist overall i'd imagine considering his slot and all.

    I reckon the reason he still plugs u2 so much is cos they're probably a major reason for him having such a steady job for his whole career.

    the pop music shows and all are probably just to make a living, can't imagine him being in the higher paid section of rte anyway.

    He doesnt like Soul either:confused::mad:

    "I dont get soul music" as he said to that famous gardner fella who presented Blood of the Irish
    He actually asked him why he liked Marvin Gaye:mad:

    Which may help explain why he doesnt like "The Blues Brothers"

    Is every cushy job in this country held by someone totally unqualified to do so :rolleyes:

    Does he have a forté or does he have a broad taste in music?

    he doesnt "get" soul music. motown and stax records never made an impact on his life whatsoever??? blimey o reilly. that gardening dude diarmaid o'whatsisname has good taste if he likes marving gaye. whats goin on is one of the greatest albums of the 70's, but then anyone who knows music already knows this fact, unless of course you are dave fanning.

    I like Dave Fanning. The Movie Show and What?!Movie and 2TV where all very good as was his Drive Time show on 2FM they shouldn't have moved him to Radio One.

    However this show sounds like an extention of his radio show on the TV.

    Compared to John Kelly ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,353 ✭✭✭Heckler

    I remember Fanning playing Whipping Boy demos when they sounded like the Jesus and Mary Chain in their Psychocandy days and they were brilliant. Twas about then I got turned onto music so I guess I have to thank him for that. Thanks Dave ! I thought his movie show was good enough. He seems to have an interest in cinema that comes through.

    How come everyone's talking about him interviewing Diarmuid Gavin? That was last year.

    I think Fanning is actually pretty good when he stands in as replacement on Tubridys show. He seems to have a much better rapport with his guests and interviews than Tubridy has.

    John Kelly is also criminally underused by RTE. He might come across as a bit serious but nobody can hold a candle to him at Montrose in terms of chairing debate or argument.

    I like him. The movie show was excellent at the time

    I enjoy his radio show I'm not fussed that he doesn't have a broad taste in music. Nobody expects someone who presents a jazz show or a classical music show to like Scandinavian death metal.

    he got me into listening to therapy? after hearing a song on the beatbox many years ago. so cant really fault the guy there.

    He interviewed Robert De Niro years ago and kept calling him 'Bobby'.
    De Niro didn't know what to do as he was being filmed.
