Has anyone completed teh above Burren Marathon in Clare??? I read that they are also holding a 1/2 marathon and a 10k on the same day..

I'd be interested to hear if anyone has ran this marathon... it's on 23/5/09..

I mailed the organizers last year, and they said it wasn't suitable for running.
Looking at some of the pictures in their gallery though, it looks like there were definitely some runners.

Some of my friends did the 10km last year and they mentioned how some of the guys doing the full ended up taking a wrong turn because the marshall wasn't in place and as a result ran approx 2 or 3 miles extra before returing to the actual course.
Think I'd try the 10km first to begin to trust the organisation of the event!!

    Howdy,

Its runnable but its pretty tough, more like a mountain run and makes Connemarathon look like a walk in the park. I regularly mountain bike the course they use and would be pretty familiar with it. I was hoping to run 20 miles of it last year as training for Dublin but just never got it together.

Location is amazing and on a good day the views are fantastic. If you were up for a challenge I'd recommend it but expect it to be tough. Parental duties are keeping me from it this year so maybe next year I'll get to it.

    Enjoy,

    Ray.

    Hi all

Here is one for you to consider - The Mourne Way Marathon

It is a linear route from Newcastle to Rostrevor along the Mourne Way. The route does not cross any mountains and is fully waymarked. It traverses the foothills of the Mountains as opposed to crossing them. You will be able to enjoy the views of the mountains without having to climb them.

Any queries feel free to contact us on the email address on the website.

As you have truly identified the GPS Plot is short and the reason for this is due to the fact that the start location has been moved by the local Council. We will however endavour to find the other two miles for all participants. Due to the nature of this type of event it is difficult to get the distances spot on but we will do our utmost to have the exact distance. The emphasis of this race is all about the scenery and running in a totally different type of event. After running the race i'm unsure if you will be annoyed that it was a couple of hundred meters short or long.

With regards to registering please refer to the pages that are already shown on the website ENTER THE MOURNE WAY MARATHON

As to your query regarding the bib collection please see here ON THE DAY

Hopefully that answers your queries and if you have any more please contact me.

People do run the marathon and the half marathon but to be honest, I just wouldn't run it this year. There were so many problems last year - I did the half marathon and we all ended up stranded on a mountain and then had to lash down the mountainside to finish the race.

I'd wait another year and see if they get the problems ironed out. If I'd put all that work into training for a marathon and then got lost because the course wasn't properly sign posted I'd feel very cheated.

Both my folks ran it last year. They are (kinda 'were' now) big time marathon runners (well over 20 completed each) and really enjoy hill walking too. This particular marathon is organised by a walking group, not a running club, and the mix of green trail, mountains and the marathon distance was a real treat to the parents as it mixed both interests.

They ran the whole thing. It wasn't like a normal marathon and in places (not always) lacked stewards, directions and some extras like iso drinks, etc.

If you are going to enter the marathon just remember it's organised by walkers and walkers don't tend to have the fuel requirements that runners do. They also go slower so they've more time to figure out junctions on green trails, etc.

But they'd nothing bad to report about it and enjoyed the whole thing.

It sounds like a fantastic event, and I would love to participate, however I'm committed to another marathon two weeks previous to the event. I hope you run it again next year, and mine will be the first name on the list. I do think that it is important to get the distance right though, and find those extra 2 miles, and even the extra 385 yards. I wouldn't want to go through the hardship of running a tough course, only to find that it was short. You should get the extra distance, even if it means running down a country lane or a way-marked mountain loop.

Best of luck with the event, and I hope it'll be on the calendar next year.

    Krusty

Thanks for the words of support. Yes we'll find those extra miles and yards.

As for next year thanks for the offer of your entry already. We may have another one planned in a totally different location for later in the year too.

    Cheers, Mac
