Thanks for the reply,do you know whats involved,i suppose i cant just park it up the back out of the way,and say its not being used

Well, you could, but it anythiong went wrong whilst you use it, then you have a liability issue.
Speak to one of training co's like FRS who do training for diggers, teleporters, forklifts and the like - you get cost of training from them and info but they want too much.
My advice is get a safety ticket from one of the many trainers that now virtually unemployed now since the building slump.

As nice has said best to do things by the book.

It is nice to save a few quid here and there but with a litigous society, scrimping on insurance is not worth it.

BTW - I know first hand what a rip off commercial insurance is in Ireland.

Someone mentioned a firm in Donegal as being unbeatable for quotes, just he did not remember the name!

I'm open to correction but I think if you are the owner of the business you don't need a licence... but employees would!

@Barry, yeah, agreed - whoever uses the forklift.
@gov, it may be britton insurance - www.brittoninsurance.com 074 9721304 - no affiliaton, but heard they are good.

You need to get insurance on the forklift and also expect an assessor to take a squint every year to check its safe.
you "could" operate without the licensed operative...but it aint worth it.
