    Just a quick question(s),

    75668.jpg

These handheld computer things that the traffic corps use, what do they actually do, automatically send the penalty points to the Fixed Penalty office or something?

And would every traffic unit be issued one on patrol?

    Thanks in advance.

FCPS Machine it's a Windows Mobile PC system housed in a holder things with all the buttons keys on it. Most if not all stations have them you can use them to issue Fixed Charge Pentalties. Handy but awfull slow to use in reality.

It's an ipod for Traffic Corps members. Includes albums such as 'Rock Ballads' and 'Top Gear: Top 40 Coolest Driving Songs'.

The FCPS handheld is pretty much like a laptop really specifically for traffic offences that attract the auld fine and penalty points. It is fairly slow to use and I wouldnt use it at the roadside for two reasons:

    1. no need to delay the driver for any longer than necessary
    2. I prefer to it recorded in my notebook for court if necessary

Some members do bring out with them and use it at the roadside. Each incident is saved to the handheld and when the member is finished with it he/she brings it back to the station and dock it to a networked computer. The incidents are then forwarded electronically the FCPS office where letters are printed and posted to the driver.
Another feature of the handheld is if the driver doesnt have their licence with them or if the garda makes the demand to produce their insurance cert, we can tick a box each for DL and Ins. It is then checked by the FCPS office for us to ensure the driver produced. If they didnt produce FCPS issues a summons on our behalf for court.
The handheld doesnt transmit any information to a base station or anything like that.

The handheld also can do vehicle checks for UTs and warnings.

Its grand to use once you are used to it, but then again i suppose I use it every other day. I'd prefer it to the paper ones but as thenog said I always write it into the notebook to avoid unneccessary delay and also to allow for the olde L7. (very important)

You can't beat the networked laptop in the car and the citation printer between the 2 front seats. Instant driver and vehicle check and when your done you can print out the ticket and hand it to the driver. :D

    It sure is an automatic.

That setup would be standard enough for your typical traffic police department.
