Has anybody done this and care to give a review.

I'm doing Athy at the end of may and i want to get in another olympic size in over the summer..... i was gonna do connemara and mourne but they clash with holidays, poor me.

the only thing i've heard is that the swim is a bit of a hoor on account of the current.

any information would be greatly appreciated, cheers

2 years ago on account of unseasonal heavy rain i believe, the current was extremely strong and many swimmers had to be fished out. Because of the size of the race and the amount of first timers doing it this issue seems to surround this event now like a curse. The facts are(presuming they dont change the course) that half the swim will be against the current and its challenging but no hoor !!

Its a huge event and for the size of it pretty well organised. If you make a weekend of it with some mates you will have a good time, watch the elite athletes after your race, good buzz in general around the town.

Last year the run course was not very well planned out or marshalled which for us amateurs doesnt make that big a difference but annoying nonetheless.

I wont be doing it again, just too many other events I would rather do.

U could try Eireman - they (we) have an Olympic event. Plus you get to race side by side with the Long & Middle distance ppl.
    Then see them finish.

WHo is gonna be crowned Eireman champion -I have a pretty good idea..... :D

I haven't done it but I really haven't heard anything good about it from anyone.

I don't know anyone who's done it a second time.

I think there's far nicer races to do.

I have to disagree with this... I've done it, I'm going back this year and I know lots of others who have done it more than once.

I really enjoyed it - they've changed lots of things about the course from two years ago that people weren't happy with. The swim being the big one - but also the run.

There is a great atmosphere in the town - it's literally jammed with people & the elite event later in the day is definitly worth hanging around for! If you're there to do a PB & will find the crowds around the place and the large transition annoying - don't bother. If on the otherhand you pick one triathlon in the summer to do with a few friends, enjoy the atmosphere & the elite race & hang around for the afterparty - it's fantastic fun... as I said I'm going back!

Done the sprint tri in athy and athlone last year. I have to say I probably preferred Athy but thats possibly because of the 25degrees and sunshine(what a day!). Athlone was good crack and definately more spectators which created a great atmosphere.

On the race, I found the swim a lot harder than Athy(all swim downstream).
The current was quite strong but do-able(just consider that with the current you will have to swim an extra 250 metres), the hard part for me was coming around the bouy when the current was coming from the side and pushing me into the pontoon with every stroke.

Anyway, the cycle is your standard flat country road and the run had a bit of a climb. If your doing Athy, you should deffo do Athlone.

I'm down to do olympic in both events this year:):) and i'll see how I get on with them but I might do the Eireman middle distance in August 2kswim - 90kcycle - 20k run:eek::eek:
