Quick question about U-turns and penalty points

    Hello all

I know this is a hard question to answer but...

A friend of mine did a u-turn. During the u-turn a car came up behind him and sort of hit the side of his car (he was half-way through the u-turn.)

No Gardai came to the crash (although they did report the crash) and the person who crashed into them doesn't seem too bothered!

Anyway, my friends car is fairly fecked now.

    Questions:

    1. Are u-turns in general illegal?
    2. Is my friend right in thinking he is to blame in this crash?
    3. Does he have to worry about penalty points?
    4. Will his insurance cover him?

I know some of these questions are hard to answer, but any advice appreciated.

    Thanks

    1. no - guidlines
    2. IMO probably not but depends entirely on the circumstances. You could argue that the other car ran into "the back" of him and therefor it would be the other guys fault. depends how far along the side the hit is
    3. i doubt it if police didn't even turn up
    4. if he has comp it will cover both. if not, only the other car

U turns are not illegal so long as its in a proper place and its safe to do so.

Insurance will always cover. Common misconception by people is that in some cases car insurance companies can in some way just decide not to pay out. They are always insuring you so are always liable but might pursue you after an incident. Doubt it in this case.

Most important...ADMIT NOTHING. Let insurance companies decide.

In fairness, the OP doesn't state if the Gardai were called.

got pulled the other morning for being on the mobile. informed i was getting 2 points and 60 quid fine. I never received any written ticket or anything but did give him my address and licence. anyone know if this procedure is ok on guards part - should i have got a ticket on the spot or does that matter?
    cheers

Yeah you'll get the fine in the post in a few weeks and the points will be added in a few weeks-months. Totally normal not to give you anything AFAIK as i got ticketed for speeding in this manner.
