best recommendation really is to do a search of the forum for 'accomodation'.

there's a heap of threads on this already, it should give you a good idea of what's available and what's considered good.

something like this should be of help:

but there are plenty more too.

Don't go to centrepoint. It is miles away from the college and the people in reception rather not talk to you if they don't have to. If your planning n going out and socialising next year prepare for a fortune of taxis aswell. If your going to be a fisrt year go to corrib it is the best for first years.

Corrib Village may be close to the college and good craic for first years but it's also very expensive and some of the apartments appear to be falling apart these days.

    Where is centrepoint located?

    Where is centrepoint located?
Near Tuam. Or that's what it felt like walking in in the rain. If you have a car and lots of 9 o clock starts it would be worth it. Free parking at centrepoint (Or there was when I was there)

    Its in Liosban Business Park.

I think naming it Centrepoint was supposed to be some sort of sick joke.

Centrepoint is ages out. It's on the Tuam Road. I think when it was being developed they still had to decide if it would be for GMIT or NUIG because its so far out.

If you do get a grant, the first payment usually isn't through until late Septmber and you'd want to have a place sorted by then. You might need to look at tryin to scrape together for a deposit now.

Student accommodation is usually more expensive than private rental but
it is such a great way to make friends and meet loads of new people. Corrib Village was pretty mank when I was there a few years ago so I'd say its not great now. Still, it's prob the best place to go if you want to have fun and lots of parties!

You can usually call to these places during the summer months and ask for a tour of one of the houses. Be warned, you'll be shown the "show house" so what you will get could be very very different!! I think you may need to look at booking soon as most of the student villages fill pretty quickly.

Just a small tip. I used to work for a Student Village. Make sure you do the inventory fully at the start of the year and note down any marks/damage on walls/doors/windows/carpets etc. They tend to screw you for your deposit when you leave.

    Enjoy college!!

Out of curiosity, how many students have their deposits returned in full?

The place I worked at, had over 100 houses I think. All had at least 4 tenants. If I can remember correctly, only about 3 people got a full deposit back.

Keep in mind that you have the Electricity deposit which distorts the figure a bit.

Everything is counted from the couches to the teaspoons. If something is missing/broken.has been replaces with something that's not the same - you're charged for it. This is why you need a complete inventory at the start of the year. Watch out for being charged for a mattress protector if they were supplied.

Marks on the carpet - carpet clean if bad
Dirty carpet tiles - charged to replace
marks on wall, chipped paint - charged to repaint

The houses are inspected to see if they need a professional clean. Even if the Mammy comes up to scrub the place, they'll probably still charge for a professional clean.
*Be careful on this. If the last tenant to leave has a party after you've all clened you could get screwed over

Thanks for the statistic, it's pretty shocking imo

They might not all be that bad but TBH most are very very scabby. Be prepared for it!
