    Nice find!

I've been seriously considering buying a classic Saab 900 Turbo 16S aero(year 1990) but have run into the following problems:

    - Insurance quote of €1000 (only have full licence a year)

    - Can't find out if rearward facing baby seat will fit on the back seat (could only justify expense if we could use it for family weekend trips - there are saab baby seats for NG 900s, but not for classics; you can get seatbelts extended but this is not recommended for baby seats)

    - would it pass NCT emissions standards?

Saab Ed - if you could help me with any of these I'd be your friend for ever.

Emissions tests in the NCT are relevant to the age of the car. Anything from before July 1992 predates Euro I standards, so I don't know what standards they would use but I'd say they're pretty leniant considering carburettors and no catalytic convertors were acceptable up until then.

EDIT: They seem to go by manufacturers specifications, judging by the NCT manual.

Join a classic car club and get yourself a classic policy. About €200 a year up to 2,000 miles with First Ireland and €80 extra there after per 2,000. You have to a have a main car policy aswell.

Insurance companies are telling me that the car wouldn't qualify for classic car insurance - presumably it's not old enough. Could that change if I were under some scheme attached to a classic car club?

(PS: Sorry for highjacking your thread)

Thats what I did. Joined Aircooled ,a V-dub club and that was it. Mines 92 and it qualifies. First Ireland in Phibsboro.

    Thanks.

If I can get the insurance sorted that would go a long way towards helping me out

How old does the car have to be before you can insure it through classic? Is it a case of over 25's only?

Nope, the rules are not set in stone. @OP and others - see the sticky in the classic cars forum. There is lots of information about insurance there.

I'd be very interested in buying a 1990's 900, or maybe a cheapo Alfa GTV as a second car just to keep, but being only 20 I'm not sure i'd be insured..Have the room back at home to store it, will have to investigate!

I remember you were looking for a classic BMW, but I don't recall you posting about buying a Saab either here or in the classic cars forum. Thread plus pics please :D
