Tv above fireplace

Hey guys/gals just a quick query (hopefully this is the right place for it, if not I apologise).
I'm currently in the process of moving into a new home with my girlfriend. The only problem is the living room is quite small and as a result we're trying to make the maximum use of space possible. With this in mind there's very little room in the corner of the room for a tv unit when the sofa is placed there also (it's hard to put the sofa elsewhere because of the size and shape of the room).

Anyway we've been to a few showhouses over the years that had tvs above the fireplace and we reckon this could be a good solution to our spacial problems. We wouldn't really light fires to be honest (good old central heating) so temperature issues wouldn't be a problem but I'm just wondering how you would go about getting a tv wired up to work above the fireplace?

At present to the left of the chimney breast has the tv point/plugs etc. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

I guess it depends on the construction of the wall that you intend to hang the TV on? It shouldn't be a problem at all especially considering that you don't intend to use the fireplace as your primary source of heating.
Is it a stud wall or solid wall? If it is a stud wall you should be able to fish the power and video cables down to the TV point at the side of the fireplace.
If it is a stud wall then you will need to secure the TV wall bracket into the wooden batons behind the wall.
If you don't feel confident hanging the screen yourself you should be able to get somebody to do it for a reasonably small fee.
What size TV is it and how far away from the screen will you be sitting as a matter of interest?

I find that Tvs located above fireplaces can be very straining on the eyes and neck especially if the room is small. I had the same dilemma myself when I moved into my new hosue as the sitting room was relatively small. I think that this idea only really works where a room is large enough to place seating a good distance away from the fireplace. It's kind of like being in a cinema where you tend not to sit in the rows closest to the front as it can be a bit of a strain. Just something to consider. This issue may not bother you at all.

It is not a good idea to mount TV on top of a fire place. It might cause collision of sight. You see the fireplace itself is kind of a solid focal point for the vision and watching TV on top of it might be disturbing.

Not a good idea at all! :)
