RTÉ have issued a public apology to Brian Cowen over running the story of the nude pictures left behind at the National Gallery and the Royal Irish Academy.

First off - why? This story is in the public domain and has been covered extensively in the press, both at home and abroad. For RTÉ to cravenly cave in to pressure from Fianna Fáil strikes me as both cowardly and absurd.

Surely this is a blow to the independence of our state broadcaster??

Today FM have been running with this all day. I won't go into the reason they have been running with it here but it seems they have become part of the story.

My own opinion is that RTÉ had a right and a duty to let the public know and that by effectively apologising for ever having run the story put themselves open to future political pressure.

If RTE dont lick up to the Government than how can u expect the government to allow them to continuosly up the price of our tv license every yr for non stop rubbish programs....that personally I never watch except for the News and Primetime which are somewhat resonable.

Its about time the TV license system which is long overdue for overhaul happened and release RTE onto the Freesat system which would reach a far larger audience and perhaps help drive advertising revenue..

Whilst in college over 10 years ago and visiting Donnybrook Studios we were informed of RTE's plans to launch an additional 5 channels. One being a 24 news channel, an Internation version of RTE for ex-pats and still ten yrs on the same heads run the same crap over and over again....and nothing has changed

What has any of that have to do with RTÉ apologising to Brian Cowen. Anything for a tv licence rant.

Maybe you haven't noticed, but this world has turned to fook and 90% of people are offended by everything. I met some guy the other day that gets offended when he sees a frog.

Was it really news worthy, really all poltical issues aside, you may not like the man, you may even hate him but he is still our Taoiseach, you may not respect the man but you have to respect the office and it was disrespectful to the office of taoiseach.

I saw the report on the RTE News and Personally i think there was more pressing matters to report on, sure it was a giggle and i did laugh, but i am sure there is more interesting and important news stories.

Overall its something TV3 or the Sun would run with, the national broadcaster should have something a bit more serious to play

Yea i know i will get killed for this but that my opinion

In your world "Hall's Pictorial Weekly" would never have come on the air, or "Scrap Saturday" for that matter.

Satire is a good safety valve and frankly this country needs a bit of laugh right now, especially considering we have a joke government in place.

Demanding respect is wrong, respect needs to be earned and frankly Cowen's censorious act shows the man deserves no respect at all.

Now where can I buy one of those T-shirts??

..Whatever about the portrait but the caption and in general the BIFFO remarks are offensive and taken a bit too far! I don't think any Offaly people I know mind been called it tonque in cheek.

You expect joe public to be annoyed with Mr. BiffoCowen and Fianna fail for the mess we're in But I expect more from the Print (broadsheet) media and our National broadcaster.

Personally I don't think FG or Labour would do any better in power Now! and possibly we would most likely be in another pile of excrement albeit a different one if they had had the reins of power last term!!

    My 2 cent

    CS aka Biffo
