hi folks, i want to get a new car but recently tried to trade in my 2004 hyundai sante fe diesel (52k) and was only offered 7000 trade in. Given that they would give me 2000 off for cash they were in effect only giving me 5000 for a car that is in perfect condition. Does anyone know where i might get a better trade in. This was against a skoda. I would like a new or nearly new diesel car

Markets gone to the wall lately. Shop around is the best advice really. I'm presuming your call is a 2wd Petrol with that price though? What car are you looking for exactly?

Old Model Santa's are making terrible money on trade in.
The new model's hammered them, and they take 5k of the new model price too.
They are hard to sell too.

I would imagine that €7000 would be a very good price for a 5 year old jeep. Jeep is important, because nobody wants them at the minute.

What do you think its worth OP?

well its a great family car and does 40mpg around the city. i suppose i expected 10000 or thereabouts. if i gog 8000 in a private sale i suppose i could get a good cash discount on a new car. dont think hyundai are any better in terms of trade ins

There's almost the twin of your car for €8450. I'd imagine if i rang him up and offered €7450 for it, he'd take my arm of with it.

I'd say take seven while you can for it, its not worth any more.

To be honest I thought the same myself, €7000 isn't brilliant but it certainly isn't awful, at least they're willing to take it off you at all. Push for a few options on the new car and you'll get your moneys worth. :)

Agreed it's not the most desirable car. 7k trade-in is quite a good deal. The dealer will need to make some mark-up on the sale. I'd value it at 8k RRP fully serviced with a warranty

thanks folks points accepted. so rather than trade in i should import. eg get a 08 passat for 18k from uk and just park up my hyundai. if i even got 4 grand for it privately i would be better off than trading in.

You have to look beyond the trade-in offer on your car. If you are going for a used car then depreciation should have reduced the value on that car also, hopefully relative to your cars depreciation. People will only get angry and insulted if they focus on their cars trade value. I recently changed car and my trade-in was almost shocking but the car i bought had actually depreciated more. Basically i got a car that would have cost me far more if i had changed during the 'boom'.

can i ask what you bought. my problem i suppose is that i am looking at 6000 per year depreciation no matter what i buy. even a 06 same car would cost me 12k, seems mad

You'd get a Passat for less than that;)
