Importance of choosing the right web domain

    Hey guys,

What are the general tips of choosing the right web domain? Should it be a name that is commonly searched e.g. (hypothetical)I have a company that sells antiques online, should I register the web domain wood.ie even though nobody will ever type in wood when looking for historical items?

    Or does it matter?

Apple sell computer components but before Apple was known, nobody would have typed in "Apple" to find computers online, they may have assumed Apple is a manufacturer who exports fruit produce etc.

Or should your web domain generally be just like your brand i.e. explain to consumers exactly what your selling.

I hope I have made myself clear.

There's 2 general routes here - branded domain or keyword domain. If you go with keywords, you'll get exact match bonuses for searches for those keywords, particularly with a .com, .net .org .ie less so. If you go with a brand it will usually be more memorable. With keyword domains disappearing or long gone, it can be expensive to get into them.

Long story short, I would investigate both options, with a preference for brandability.

If your selling antiqes online, i'd nearly call it the same antiquesonline.ie (it's available;)) unless your trying to hit a worldwide audience i'd go for something like irishantiquesonline.com . there'll be no mistaking what your website is about....

If you go the brandability route make sure there's no double meanings on your name either grammatically or in slang.

For example: wood.ie could have several meanings across a broad demograph ;)

When are you getting your business running?

Over the past year or so I have been going from one idea to the next (look at my past threads) and I don't want to do the usual and do a Grad programme in some company where it won't be doing what I want to do. I'm currently travelling the world at the moment and have had the time to think about things I'd like to do and have looked through my "business idea notebook" :p (nerd) and have decided on what I want my next business to be based on.

I am going to be marketing products (import merchant/marketing and sales) that a niche market would use but with my USP being how these products are made. I'm quite excited about it. I'm going to be branding these products, and registering a trademark. I'll also be a one man team starting off with the potential of bringing in a partner (I know who he is already) depending on success that should give me a boost in the UK. But that's all wishful thinking for now, I'm just concerned on getting up and running.

I will be looking for advice here in the coming months as the start date is to be up and running in the most basic form by September 09 and I have decided it is going to be. I am currently just writing up a business plan to prepare for the enterprise board for when I am home in September.

    Thoughts?

Another question, is there a way of finding out what keywords are popular online? I have used a SEO tool called Traffic Travis (but it doesn't cover Google Ireland) and also google trends but I find the results on google trends to be rather crap. I mean, it rarely has enough data captured for loads of different popular terms.
