FS / Adverts Sticky Thread.

As I open the gates of feedback on myself!

Is the thread working - could it be tweaked?

    Or should it be abandoned.

IMO: seems to serve a good purpose as a notice board, one post individuals advertising their bits, and for longer serving members. Is the lack of discussion misleading? Does that happen now on adverts instead - and do we miss it, if it is over there?

If I scrap the thread, will some people simply not post? bad thing.

I see some people looking for feedback, and not seeming to get it. Those people may well not have started a thread all on their own, but it seems a shame that they're not hearing back at all.

I recall blorg was concerned that the discussion cross over would be confusing. It seems to have gone the other way, and there's little or no discussion. Which is grand if it happens elsewhere.

As this place gets busier, I think we need to find a structure to accomodate members being notified of things that may be of interest, without the clutter of three new threads a day advertising. The thread was the first attempt. Should it stay, change, or go.

    Solutions and remedies please.

I like the thread and think it should stay. I check it every time I log in and I think the forum would be far to cluttered with individual posts.
I'm not sure what sort of discussion would be needed apart from the appropriation of knowledge and history of the item/s being sold and that generally seems to happen in the Adverts.ie posts (I believe).
Should people want to know more about an item then I don't see why they couldn't post in the FS thread or Adverts.ie.

I don't mind the thread as long as seperate FS: posts are not banned, I had one up myself to sell my Focus Cayo and it had a fair bit of discussion and interest (sold to Lumen, albeit I had mentioned it to him before on a spin) that I don't know would have been so obvious in that thread. I don't know how much stuff is actually shifting on the amalgamated thread, there seems to be a lot of people posting something up and nothing is heard again as you say. Maybe the amalgamated thread would be good for parts while allowing bikes as seperate threads where there might be more cause for discussion than a part? I am biased as I have a Specialized Sirrus converted to drops ready to go next :)

I think separate threads are good for full bikes, parts are best on the single thread.

Selling a bike is a big enough deal to warrant it's own thread, provided it's not junk.

Part of the problem is that adverts.ie seems poorly implemented. The pictures are too small, and bikes are in with Wii Fits, dumbells etc in "Sports & Fitness Equipment". That's just plain undignified, and more importantly makes it hard to find stuff. Decent metadata and a well-designed search function would help (is it even possible to search within a category?).

I think a sub forum would be best for all for sale/wanted adds. Shooting has a seperate sub forum for all guns, bits to be sold etc, and while not hugely used it is useful for people trying to get an idea of second hand prices, etc. It keeps the main board uncluttered, and from the size of the cycling forum these days I think a seperate for sale sub forum is entirely justified.

Some interesting points raised there. I think allowing separate posts for bikes or frames is a good idea, while keeping the sticky for parts etc. I'd agree with Lumen in saying adverts.ie isn't that great on it's own, so it's good to be able to post larger pics here and simply being able to point to all the cycling related stuff on sale.

It's also interesting when things generate a bit of a discussion, e.g. if people think someone is taking the mick with pricing etc. Useful for potential buyers to get the views of a wider range of people than you may get from people simply bidding on the item.

Don't think a sub-forum is the way to go though. Out of sight, out of mind, and all that.

I'd never search adverts.ie, but I would take a look at what's posted here as I know it's generally decent quality stuff being put up by people.

All of which reminds me is that I've got a wardrobe full of stuff that I really should clean up, photograph and sell off before I move house later on this year.

Move it to adverts, this section is for discussions. Discussions clutter up the advert and its harder to find answers relevant to important questions. Adverts is straight, upfront no messing about. Sometimes but not often when idiots do post stupid comments on people advert and clutters it. The seller usually starts a new thread again with the sale.

Having that thread here undermines the purpose of adverts, there's a sports and fitness section there where people sell bikes.

A possible temporary solution could be to create a thread and have people post up just the link of their advert on adverts.ie

That's what we are doing already. You're not allowed post something for sale unless it contains a link to adverts.
