    Hi,
Does anybody know what happens if your company gives notice to you that you are being made redundant in six months and you get pregnant?

It would mean that when your redundancy date arrives you'd be 6 months pregnant and probably find it impossible to get another job?

    Comments welcomed.

Well companies don't have to pay you for mat leave so I presume that you'd just get your normal state benefit for 24 weeks and look for a job when you're coming to the end of your state benefit?

Never been in that situation though so not sure!

Start interviewing early - I got the job I'm in now at 5 months pregnant. You could easily disguise the bump, particularly if it's your first, and you're not obliged to tell them. It is illegal for a company to hold pregnancy against you when interviewing, but no harm not rubbing it in their faces either, if you know what I mean. As for maternity benefit, having only been with the company 3 months, I only got state benefit, which I thought was fair enough!

One of the girls in place was made redundant when she was pregnant about a month ago but she was entitled to maternity leave paid for by the company because of how far along she was, plus her package.

i am not sure of the in's and out's of it but it would be worth looking into

As far as I know if you are made reduntant 24 weeks prior to your maternity leave date, which at six months you would be, then you can start maternity leave then. If you claim state benefit on leaving, you may lose maternity benefit rights, which depending on your current pay, could be higher than the dole. However, this also means your maternity benefit ends earlier as it is 26 weeks in total.
You should really ring up Citizens advice bureau and they can be more specific.
