    looking for a good mechanic with experience of opel diesels,
    engine warning light coming on and cutting power - occurs around 60mph while cruising - cant get to the root of the problem!

    have an engine code reader myself and have tested solenoids the egr valve, replaced the fuel pump, replaced the leak off pipes and done the injectors also checked the vacuum pump and pipes oh and i also cleaned out the intake air manifold. Car is giving way better fuel economy now but still gettin the engine warning light !
    Error codes are P0400 critical system malfunction and P0190 Mechanical fault in fuel system. . . .

    What kind of symptoms did you have?
    Was it intermittent?

    Are the codes present or not present when you check with your code reader

    Not present, they only come up when the engine warning light comes on. I clear the codes and they only come back when the engine warning light comes on.

    On autodata those two faults come up as.

    P0190= Fuel rail pressure sensor
    P0400= EGR valve circuit.

    I can help you out by providing you some diagnostic checks to do. Have you got a vacuum gauge? If so I can email you a procedure to check the problem. Usually critical system malfunction p0400 relates to a vacuum problem. Most likely being one of the small vacuum hoses. You will have to really check these properly because a tiny crack in one of these will cause this problem of an intermittent power loss and trouble code. Examine all of these and if possible take them off, cover one end and check them with a vacuum gauge. Also the connections at the ends of these can crack with age or become loose and will cause this. After you are 100% sure these are ok you can move on to the next step.

    let me know if you have a vacuum gauge and pm me your email.

    As for the second trouble code there are 3 trouble codes for P0190 but your code reader will probable not specify which it is.

    P0190 - Mechanical Fault in Fuel System (Idle Speed)
    P0190 - Mechanical Fault in Fuel System (Partial Load)
    P0190 - Mechanical Fault in Fuel System (Full Load)

    If the second trouble code is becoming present these are the things to check.

    Mechanical fault in high-pressure section of injection pump
    Check all mechanical components of the fuel system.
    Point of breaks / scuff marks at the fuel or injection lines
    Plugging, leakage or air in fuel system
    Check injection nozzles

    I know this isnt very specific but reply and let me know if you need more help on checking some of these things.

    Its Partial load,

    I had the Vacuum pipes checked at the diesel specialists as i couldnt find the problem myself, i also had the injectors and the seals done as i had starting problems. Starting problems are much improved but not perfect. was previously turning over for ages until it fired sometimes draining the battery! its not starting but slightly hesitant. Might change the fuel filter housing for a new one from opel instead of one from a scrap yard...!
    Thanks for the info
