Word for the Act of Forgetting

Looking for a word to describe the act of forgetting? I was thinking of something like forgettion, forgettinating... etc but they are not words.

I'm not talking about the quality of forgetfulness, rather the process of forgetting a memory? dememorization?

Anyone know?

Say in this sentence what would be the blank? Absent-mindedness doesn't seem right.

"The witness could not remember the number due to [blank] caused by head trauma."

Like a word that could be used instead of "loss of memory" that has the same meaning.

EDIT: upon reading that back, amnesia could be used, but it's not exactly what I'm looking for.

Yeah, it would be a word like amnesia, but that dealt with the natural process of forgetting and not one caused by injury or shock. Like the natural losing of information from our short term memory. There has to be a single word for it.
