Just another tax question...

    Hey there

Have a car tax question, having a bit of a difference in opinion with my friend here, she reckons she's right, and she probably is, but here we go!!

She crashed her car last week, its a write off and she's buying a new one today. It was taxed up until November.

I told her she should call the tax office and let them know as surely there has to be some way of getting a refund for the months the car will not be used for.

She reckons that money is gone, that they will do nothing for her, and she's not even going to call them.

Now I know I could call them myself and just ask, but I don't want her to think I'm butting in, even though I'm just trying to save her a few quid. So I'm wondering if anyone can tell me who is right, her or me?

She's probably right, she would know more about that kind of thing than me, but it just seems very unfair. I could understand if the car was sold on and someone else was driving it, but its going to be scrapped for parts.

I don't know for sure, but I remember some one on here got the money back. It makes sense for her to get money back.

    .

If the insurance company is involved, they'll usually claim this back, but if no insurance firm, go ahead

Yep, if it went through the insurance company then they are buying the car from her, so the tax goes with it. She should take that into account when negotiating the settlement figure.

ok well in all fairness there was no negotiation involved, she was told there would be a cheque for x amount sent to her and that was that. She can be quite stubborn in her ways and I was surprised that when I told her she may be able to claim some tax back, she just said "No I can't, my dad told me, and I'm not even going to bother calling to check for myself."

But thanks alot for the info, I think I will go ahead and call the motor tax office. She won't mind me sticking my oar in if I earn her some money back!!

Yes she can provided the vehicle is crushed/has its chassis rails cut i.e. never to be repaired. She'll need the old tax disc to present to her Motor Tax Office.

I am pretty sure that she can't do this as the insurance bought the car from her.
