As everyone has now switched their leccy supply to either airtricity or bord gais, has anyone looked into switching their gas supplier?

Flogas are claiming to be significantly cheaper than BG both for unit price and standing charge. Not sure what the overall saving would be, but as my most recent gas bill was the largest I've ever received I'm very interested in any reduction I can get. are there any other suppliers out there?

flogas are not that much cheaper at all. they are doing a special offer of 60% off the standard charge (which is 59.02) for 12 months so it would be €25

    6.210 bord gais
    is
    6.1233 flogas

At the moment flogas and Bord gáis are the only two supplying to the retail market. Their are others in the business end though.

Not really a BA this, might be better in Requests

yeah, would've saved me €11 on a nearly €400 bill - not sure if thats worth the hassle of switching.

How would it only save you €11 for the year when you'd be saving 60% on the standing charge alone?

Edit: Unless €59.02 is the yearly standing charge, and the 60% saving works out at €34 per year?

exactly - the standing charge is only a small part of the bill. and thats €11 for one bi-monthly bill.

You'd probably save more by staying with Bord Gais and also switching to them for electricity .

Flogas are now offering a 7% discount on Bord Gais tariffs (including 2% discount for direct debit bill pay).

If they advertised this offer a bit more (what about copying Bord Gais' Big Switch marketing campaign?) I'm sure lots more people would sign up to Flogas. It's a no-brainer coming into these Autumn/Winter months.

Can you get gas in the Galway area?

I never realised you could change Natural Gas suppliers though they are very vague about if BG come down in price in their FAQs, seems like all they promise is to be cheaper tho how much cheaper is the question!

Well, they would have to be a minimum of 5% cheaper than BG, all of the time, to give people an incentive to switch.

Thanks for this. I may well look at changing this over.

I got the same thing from one of their agents who called to the door around six weeks back. Mailed them to get more information and the reply I got from their cust care said it would "at least one full year before Airtricity would be entering the gas market". That mail from them was from this time last month.

Given that there has been nothing in the press/media about them entering the gas market I'd be inclined to believe the one full year comment. If they were entering the residential gas market shortly you'd expect to be seeing some early PR coming from them - directly or otherwise.

There has been a small bit of PR from Airtricity regarding supply of gas to residential homes here. But, given the vague reference to the timeframe I'd be very surprised to see them offering a residential gas service before the end of the year.

Airtricity have a history of promising things that they don't live up to....
