Would I be able for a boards spin?

    Hey Guys,

I’m new to cycling, I got my first road bike and did my first spin on the 4th of Feb. I have managed to get in 10 spins in since then, which I have thoroughly enjoyed. Not having being on spins with others I have no idea if I would be up to group spins yet. I did my first 70KM spin on Saturday which I found quite challenging but I think this was due to the fact that I had done too much exercise over the previous 5 days. I have a good bit of time on my hands at the moment due to the recession, so I’m using it to get fit after 5 years of no exercise. Here is a link to the stats from my spin on Saturday. http://connect.garmin.com/activity/2667475 I would appreciate any feedback on the route I did and if I need to pick up the pace for a spin like this.

Hi. IMO you would be able to do a spin. I am not a regular "boards spiner" myself, but when I have been out, that route has featured (or variants of it).
Pace for me has been 22-23km/h (built up from around 20km). That is similar to the pace that you have done. On the basis of my reading of your stats, you have nothing to be afraid of.
Come on out and you will find ou easily enogh if it is something that you enjoy.

Your stats look solid and your average speed near enough what we do. You'd be grand. We start from dundrum, and decide on a route then, so you'd either have to meet us there (a bit out of your way it seems) or arrange to meet us en-route by phone or something.

It is very, very important you go metric though. Miles? No, no, no. Feet? Ah ffs...

Can I ask what bike computer you used for this? I presume it is some Garmin one but I am very impressed at the detail it provides for analysing your training!

That's a pretty cool device you have there!

Wouldn't mind going for a spin myself but I'd be afraid I couldn't keep up too :o

Used to cycle about 100 miles a week for a period of about a year, but that was about 4 years ago and I've gone downhill since but want to get fit again. How fit is the most unfit of the group?

Pretty impressive top speed too, 75 km/hr!

I'd say you would be well able for it.

Thanks for the replies. I will definitely try and make the next spin. I find the Garmin very good as you can look back at your spin when you get home and see were you working hard or not up those hills. It’s very good for running also. The only thing is that the top speed readout has gone a bit crazy twice. The last spin it said I did 75kph when in fact it was 65kph when you have a closer look at the graphs. Another spin I did it said I did 87kph which I never want to do on my bike, at 65kph I was holding on quite tight and I was only freewheeling. Fast enough for me.

My 405 has also given some crazy top speed readings (around 10-15kph faster then I was going. only happens now and again I presume it is an issue with the GPS connection being lost/re-established.

To answer your question, anytime that I have been out, I have been the most unfit member of the spin. Hills are a problem at my weight and lung capacity.
People are very good and helpful. There is a lot of encouragement and patience. I would say that if you can cycle 75km on your own in a hilly area in 3.5hrs, then there is not much of a step up to heading on a boards spin.
If you search the thread for Boards Pins or Saturday Spin you will see the type of terrain/distances and speed covered.

I am getting back on the bike as well soon after a while away,we should have a few 'beginner spins' over the summer.
