I need some advice on what bike to buy. I've been looking around bike sites but am getting lost with the range that is out there.

I did a fair bit of cycling when I was younger but my bike has been completely neglected for 6 years or so & with the gov scheme I think the time might be right to get a new one

    My restrictions/preferences would be:
    Price somewhere around 600-650 euro.
My preference is for a hardtail as I've always cycled MTBs and I think I'll get the best value for money with this type of bike. I am open to correction/persuasion on this.
I'll be mainly cycling on roads
I kind of want want disc brakes for no other reason then "cause"

That's about it. All advice is very welcome.

Stating the obvious here, but if you're only going to be cycling on roads you'd be better off with a road bike (or even a hybrid).

You definitely get more moving parts for your money with a MTB. Whether these will make you faster depends on whether you'll be going off-road.

Think hard about the "mainly on roads" bit, since the resulting compromises will completely determine your purchase. It's just like car buying - would you go into a dealer and say "I want a car, mainly for use on roads"? If so, he would sell you a 4x4, which would be completely crap on the road.

Disc brakes = thief magnet, more to go wrong, less VFM. On the plus side, they look really fancy.

Mountain bikes are hell on the roads, marginally better with lockout and slicks but still hell compared to a hybrid, tourer or cross bike (with slicks.)

How much off-road do you want to do, and of what sort- proper mountain biking or fireroad/track type stuff? As the latter can be done easily on a hybrid/tourer/cross bike.

Lumen even did a complete loop of Ballinastoe on his cross bike (although it was not optimal on the singletrack and some blood ensued :))

A mountain bike has lots of heavy off-road specific components. You are spending more money on this stuff completely unnecessary for on road riding which is only going to weigh you down and is more to go wrong.

If you want to do technical singletrack, get a mountain bike. If you want to do road with the occasional fireroad-type trail then get a hybrid, tourer or cross bike.
