Considering buying a classic to replace the old '02 Civic hatch. I want something with a bit more character that won't depreciate.

Called every insurer I could think of today and here are the results
    I'm a 20yr old Male, License 1yr, 2yrs Named driver.

    Quinn Direct:
    Refusal. No cars >15yrs old

    FBD:
    Refusal. No under 25's

    Hibernian:
Refusal, will insure under 25's, must hold license >5yrs.

    First Ireland:
Refusal, no cars >20yrs for regular policy. Over 25's for classic policy.

    AXA:
Approval for any car that isn't high risk. (No GTI's)

    Carole Nash:
    Car cannot be >20yrs old.

I also rang a few brokers that I cannot remember the name of but they all refused.

I'm considering using AXA should I purchase a classic. They were reasonable enough @ €1100 Comp + courtesy car, glass cover, roadside assist etc. Car in question was a 1.3l 1980 MK1 Golf valued at €3000 which is cheaper than my current insurance with Quinn Direct.

That's that sorted so help me pick a car <30yrs

    I was thinking:

    Toyota Starlet 60/70 series
    VW golf Mk1 non-GTI
    VW polo mk1/2
    VW Scirocco MK1/2
    Honda CRX maybe

Requirments: <€4000, not 'high performance', no rust buckets (don't mind getting my hands dirty but nothing that a novice can't tackle, easy on the fuel >30mpg, reliable. It must be individual with character.

Suggestions? (links to ads would be great!)

    How about this? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Lancia-Fulvia-Sedan-S2_W0QQitemZ250328216471QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAutomobiles_UK?hash=item250328216471&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A4%7C65%3A3%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

The saloon looks a lot plainer than the coupes, but it's far better to drive than you might think. I'd have one ahead of a Mk1 Golf 1.3 any day.

Did AXA quote you on a normal policy or a "classic" one? My Datsun is on a classic policy with them, though its the very same as standard 3rd party.

Standard policy, they seem to be the only ones who will insure old cars as a main driver. And AFAIK it has to be <30yrs old anan1 for them to insure me, looks gorgeous though...

I think the Scirocco if you can get a good one or the CRX.

think carefully about this...a classic car isnt an everyday driver..the one your lookin at is nearly 30 yrs old and will need constant maitanence which can eat into your finances when your 20..and at 3000 euro i doubt (could be wrong and apologise if i am)if its in great nick...can be hassle if it breaks down on your way to work or your girlfriend get sick of pushing it..but on the other hand its a cool car ..i have a mk1 gti cabriolet myself

I'd go for a mk1 MR2 given the chance. (hopefully that will be in 2 months or so)

You may find it pricey to insure on a standard policy however.

Very nice supercharged example on adverts atm.
