So they're jumping from blurry maps straight into street view?

Okey doke. What's the time frame for getting this up and running?
    Probably at least 6 months.

There's one of them around the corner from me in Cherrymount. Its camera has been folded down until today though so I presume they've just started. Anyone know how many they are using? Google Maps use images from NASA satellites afaik so it's not their fault the resolution is low.

Yes but Waterford is blurryy while a lot of other places are not. That's the point I'm making. They seem to be missing a step.

they had a rep from google on the radio the other day and asked him the same question... his answer was very simple.. everytime they have tried to get higher res pics of irish citys there is cloud cover... nothing they can do about it :(

maybe ireland will get a summer this year and we can get better res pics :D

I look forward to this being completed but are they allowed do this no questions asked? Has there been many complaints against it in the US and other countries its in?
For example I'm sure plenty of people have a problem with their house being shown around the world.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,657 ✭✭✭trishw78

they've removed some images some man was coming out of a porn shop he asked for that image to be removed. I think it was some people in the UK have asked for images to be removed and they were sucessful.

These people should also know that I can take a photo of their house and post it on the net, nothing illegal about doing this

    anybody can do the same

I thought something like that happened alright. It's great virtually walking down the streets of cities around the world but when you're looking at your front door it's a bit, ya know, creepy, big brother style.

Why is it any different from someone walking down the road and seeing your front door?

Google have been fairly good about removing things on request, but there's no legal requirement for them to do this. (or at least, the law is shady)

Well I suppose it's no different but it's just an amazing thing to be able to do.
As I said, I don't have a problem with it, just wondering.

I find it amusing that most of the complaints about google are coming from the UK, the UK has more CCTV cameras then any country in the world which means people can be monitored in real time using them....yet they bitch and moan about a photo of them on a street which anyone with any camera or phone can take anyway.

    Priority's eh? :)

The Register are putting together a sequence of photos of people who've taken a photograph of a Google car, and have then found a picture of themselves taking the photograph on Google Streetview:

saw the google car this morning at the top of john's hill, can't miss it in fairness :)

i know the guy driving the Google car, he told me it's a nine month contract, but it can only take photo's when it's not too cloudy or raining,

So i'm guessing in this rainy land of ours it could take a couple of years to get waterford alone done

Ahhh, ok right... Saw it this morning on Thomas Street, just outside Downes pub and didn't have a notion what it was... Thanks for that! :D

Any ideas on how long it takes for the images to be uploaded, quite a while I'd imagine?
And also will it have the whole city done or just the main streets? From the places where it's been spotted it looks like it'll be pretty extensive coverage!

    Feckin crazy english people

    http://tech.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/04/02/1731231
"A Google Street View car has been chased out of a British village by angry residents [CC] [MD] [GC]. The car was taking photographs of Broughton in Buckinghamshire for Google's when it was spotted by a local resident who warned the car not to enter the village then roused his neighbors, who surrounded the vehicle until the driver performed a U-turn and left. 'This is an affluent area,' protester Paul Jacobs said. 'We've already had three burglaries locally in the past six weeks. If our houses are plastered all over Google it's an invitation for more criminals to strike. I was determined to make a stand, so I called the police.'"

But many other countries have shared their OS aerial photographic maps with Google Earth. Look at Wales and England, for example. No reason why we can't do likewise: http://ims0.osiemaps.ie/website/publicviewer/main.aspx?id=&utype=&ecom=S1&user= (zoom in close et voila)

also jim.. you said you don't know what they are doing here because we aint even in hi res plain old google satellite maps.. i agree but i do think it will be fin to walk down roads via the internet and every surface saying "we are sorry we don't have imagery at this zoom level for this region, try zooming out for a broader look"
    :p

The cars are still going around anyway. They're in the various estates in the Williamstown area this morning. Just spotted one driving up and down all the cul-de-sacs in my estate.

I thought I drove past this the other night. It seemed like a very old car, but I spotted what looked like an odd looking roof rack but when I looked in my mirrors you couldn't make out what it was.
