Thinking about something like this Cooper D for the missus, she drives from Mullingar to Tullamore daily.

I haven't driven a New Mini since shortly after they were originally launched so before I arrange a test drive I thought I get some opinions first.

She is concerned about the ride quality, do they all come with run flats? What is the ride like on less than ideal surfaces?

Honest John mentions cracks and oil leaks, how wide spread are these?

I figure the car above should be on the road here for about €16,500 which seems like reasonable value and who knows, but you would think it should hold up well in value over 2 or 3 years and provide reasonably economical motoring for her.

Anyone care to offer any opionions?

    Cheers

    D-M.

She'd want to be doing serious mileage to justify it. Both the 1.4 petrol and 1.6 petrol will do 48mpg. The diesel will do 72mpg+ (I've gotten 85 out of one) but at the expense of a noisier engine, small powerband, and having a heavy lump of an engine up front which makes the back end of the car light.

If the alloys are 16 inches or bigger, yes they come with runflats, but the suspension setup is deliberately softer to cope. There are threads here where people who have 3 Series M Sport say the ride is fine with runflat tires at 17" low profile runflat tires.

Edit : The car you've linked to is on standard tires.

First I've heard, although I had a coolant leak on one before.

They're not so saleable when you're finished with them TBH. Unless she's doing astronomical miles, the petrol is the better purchase. It's a more refined engine, and more balanced in terms of handling, and can offer the sort of mpg's that most diesel cars do anyway - and most importantly the petrol will have a larger audience of potential buyers when you're finished with it.

The 2008 Diesel is 104 Euro to tax, a 2008 Petrol is 156 Euro to tax, so no big difference there either.
