39 hour working week?

Hi All, can anyone tell me how the 39 hour working week breaks down? I mean, what would that be on a regular day If it's 9am to 5pm, monday to friday that's 40 hours (so close enough). Do you get paid for lunchtime? If not, and you had 1 hour for lunch, that would only be a 35 hour week, so am i right in thinking the working day should be 9am to 6pm?

    Thanks in advance.

It varies from workplace to workplace. It's really whatever the contract says. My current job is 39 hours including lunch breaks. My previous job was 40 hours excluding a mandatory lunch hour. I'd expect a lunch-exclusive working week to be more common.

Normally, the industrial 39 hour week is

    Mon-Thur 08:00 - 17:00 with one hour lunch unpaid
Fri 08:00 - 16:00 with one hour lunch unpaid.

It is highly unusual to have a paid lunch, in any industry/service. But there is often a 30 minute lunch.

I am currently working a 40 hour week 8.30 to 5.30 Monday to Friday
and have 1 hour lunch unpaid. Which is a 9 hour working day in my eyes.
Am I entitled to any paid breaks?

    How?
    You only work eight hours.

Re paid breaks, there is nothing in law to entitle you to any. But there may be something in your contract.
