I've a 2002 Almera, it keeps slipping out of 3rd gear while I'm accelerating so I'm guessing I'm going to need a new gearbox. Any ideas what I can expect to pay?

Common fault. You don't need a new g/box just repair. I'd about €500 -600. Ring around for quotes as this is a well know fault. Try the g/box repair centre on the Naas Rd, just before Morans hotel. Sorry can't remember the name but he has done dozens of Almera g/box repairs for the exact same fault.

    Cheers for the reply.

That's a relief if it doesn't need replacing, I'll ring around.

Is there any value in getting these type jobs done North of the border?

Doubtful, what you want really is a local repair with a warranty.

It will be cheaper to put in a second hand gearbox.

    +1

but they are hard to get ... often go in Almeras, but the most common fault is bearing failure (whine in box), not worn synchromesh (jumping out of gear). End result is the same - secondhand gearbox.

Expect to give about 300 euro or so for a secondhand gearbox.

Personally would'nt bother as one could be back in the exact same position again.

+1, Just bypass 3rd use a few more revs in 2nd gear and go straight to 4th.
