    What was the purse.
I hope they both got enough money for that fight.. Jessssssss ..

I don't watch that much boxing - but IMHO the ref should have stopped it in about round 6.

talking is that Cordoba for 200k and Bernard less than that - I have no solid figures?

Dunne got €76,000, even if it hindsight it may seem a bad idea I thought the ref was right to let it go as long as he did.

Less that 200K for dunne.. would that include sponsorship??
That's not many bananas for putting your body on the line to that extent.

I thought Dunne looked dead on his feet and incapable of defending himself in about round 6.,.. I was shocked the ref did not stop it.

Is Cordoba ok? Was it mostly exhaustion that got him in the end??

Really. I mean on the betting exchanges dunne went to 200/1 to stop cordoba within the distance..
I thought It needlessly put his health at risk for 76K and the match....
It's a tough way to earn a living..jesus,,.. fair play.

No, that wouldnt include sponsorship or TV money, which would be extra - but it also wouldnt be net of trainer, manager, gym, sparring partner fees etc

I assume that he to accept such a small purse in order to make it economically viable to get Cordoba over - Cordoba was the title holder and he held the power.

I reckon BD will earn at least x4 that for his next fight.

I don't believe the fight should have been stopped in fact I think the ref did an excellent job all night.

As do I, I think Bernard looked OK in the sixth and got stronger as the fight went on past the fifth - well by stronger I mean faded less than Cordoba.

The only thing I might have had an issue with was that there is a case to say Cordoba should have been stopped after the second KD in the 11th.

Yeah I thought that myself - Dunne was under a lot of pressure but covered up well and threw a few shots back - he survived.

I also thought Cordoba could have been stopped earlier but the guy was champion and did get back to his feet, I certainly wouldn't criticise the ref for allowing him to continue.

yeah he was the champion, a Panamanian WBA champion, and deserved every oppertunity to keep going.

I was really worried during the 5th round but as soon as he came out for the sixth I could see his legs were good...

I think if you watched a lot of boxing, you wouldn't have come out with the second part of that sentence.

Round six - what possible reason could the ref have had to stop in round six - because they looked like they might hit each other some more ????

3/1 for Dunne to win, 16/1 for the stoppage and 100/1 for stoppage in the 11th.

Needless ?, don't tell Brian Peters but I'm guessing Dunne would of fought that fight for free. Men like him are in this for the glory.

I have to agree here! The sixth was an important round! Both used it to regain composure n clear the head. From here on Dunne began his second wind whereas Cordoba was running running out of whatever he had left! To stop it in the sixth would have been criminal!

The ref in general had a good fight, annoyed me in the early rounds by consistingly tell the boxers to watch their feet, fairly distracting! Maybe should have stopped it after second knockdown in 11th but easy to say that in hindsight.

does anyone know much he got?
i heard something on the radio about 5 million or was that for his next fight?
1 of my mates says he only got 250,000
theres no way he only got that,
    can anyone help settle this

Big Ears said it was 76k. I will take that as gospel!

Well you'll have to trust Brian Peters with that not me...........
Peters also said it was the biggest payday of Dunne's career, and that bit really surprised me as I had heard of Dunne making 6 figures for some of his European fights but then again I actually can't remember my sources for that.

Dunne will make a lot more for his next fight, expect about twice what he got for Saturday's work.

The 5 million is an unfounded rumour that's going around, and its in relation to another fight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,378 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Wow, that adds a twist, Big.

Peter's said it was Dunne's highest purse to date. That does seem quite low.

Had I been asked to guess, I would have said that Dunne would have made as much
as Cordoba, despite the fact that Cordoba was champ, it was in Dunne's back
yard and he was the draw in Dublin

So, if it was Dunne's highest purse to date, then we have to take it that
Dunne was making less as European champ.

He deserves a big pay day in his next fight

    Its about a 100,000 or so,not more than 200,000.

5 million lol he wont get close to that fore his next fight or ever.

I would guess anywhere between 150-200 k. He was making more at previous shows at the point and we all know Cordoba got the lions share this time.

it was a world title fight !

i thought the ref did a splendid job at keeping the fighters apart. He allowed the boys to box and brawl. i thought he was right to allow cordoba to fight till the 3rd knockdown in the 11th. this is a world title these boys are fighting for.

the figures given as per the irish times were Dunne €76,000 and cordoba €150,000.

surely you cannot use the word "only" on the same line as "250,000"

When 50% of that only is taken away through manager, promoter and trainer fees, + cutsman and others and then 40% of what's left is given to the taxman then only 250,000 is actually much less and considering you've been breaking your bollocks for 3 months before actually entering the ring and you happen to be a World Class fighter then, it is really 'only' 250,000

An English premier League footballer can earn that in two weeks if he's one of the top players, and he can do that sitting on his arse if he happens to be injured. If Dunne was to get injured after 2 1/2 months he'd have gotten nothing. Not to mention what these men put at stake every time they go into the ring.

Fighters deserve every penny they get, usually more so.

Thats the quickest Ive seen 250k wither away since watching Mike the Mouth palyin poker :(

In comparison to football players its rudiculous, but also keep in mind he is getting paid for doing something he loves

I'm sure he dosen't love getting punched in the face quite as much as you think!
It is a disgrace how little most boxers earn though. It is the toughest sport with only a tiny percentage of boxers making big money at it.

LOL @ 5 million. He wouldn't make 5 in his entire career. Bernard made 175K ish, including sponsorship.

At last I manage to get online with no work restrictions.

Didn't know where to put in my piece about Dunne's epic win, so here's as good as any.

F*cking mega fight. I lost 160quid but I couldn't give a toss. That was wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.... and I'm one of the very original doubters, long before Kiko !! Thank you Bernard for proving me wrong... about your stamina anyway, still not convinced about the chin, but hey enjoy the glory, you deserve it !!

Whatever money they both earned it isn't half enough, especially when compared to those fairy-boy cheating ponces who play The Boring Game across the water. If the 76k quoted is his biggest purse I'm a little surprised, as he has been drawing big crowds and TV coverage for a few years now. Hopefully he really cashes in on the title.

    Well done.

Hey dont start feelin sorry for him - he is one of the fortunate ones, there arent many people in this world who get out of bed in the mornings and do what they wanted to do since 5 years of age, and at the highest level

You could take his money away from him and he would still be a happy man, take his boxing away and that would be a different story

Me? I'm allergic to getting hit in the face, but obviously he has taken to it well

And I'm still waiting on a phone call from Rafa

Yeah but it's a hard way to make a living all the same. It's nice to see someone aknowledging the fact that it's not all about the money with Bernard though. You can tell the chap absolutely loves the sport.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,378 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Bernard is no different than any true boxer, the love the sport, but they still
wouldn't be in it for nothing. They are only HUMAN!
