I know we have quite a few Steven Jones fans here, myself included. Who else would come up with a Lions 15 that includes 9 Welsh players despite coming 4th in the 6 nations. He even left the player of the tournament, top try scorer and probably best player in the Northern Hemisphere out. The rest of the panellists seemed embarrassed by him.
    15 Lee Byrne (Wales)
    14 Rob Kearney (Ireland)
    13 Tom Shanklin (Wales)
    12 Gavin Henson (Wales)
    11 Shane Williams (Wales)
    10 Stephen Jones (Wales)
    9 Mike Phillips (Wales)
    1 Gethin Jenkins (Wales)
    2 Ross Ford (Scotland)
    3 Jerry Flannery (Ireland)
    4 Paul O’Connell (Ireland)
    5 Alun-Wyn Jones (Wales)
    6 Tom Croft (England)
    8 Ryan Jones (capt) (Wales)
    7 David Wallace (Ireland)

I'd be more worried about Flannery at tighthead!

Brings real credibility to the article over all. Lash Stringer in at hooker while we're at it

Next time someone uses the line "Well he played proffesional rugby, he must know what he's taking about" I am going to link them to that article. Some selections in the other teams are bizarre.

Amazing Kenny thinks we can beat them with 14

Could we see a first from my memories a Loin squad with England not have more players than any other team.

I would be pretty sure BOD would start outside centre for every nation

Stephen Jones is a clown, i love the times but its hard to take any of his articles with any credibility, the same man heralded Henson as a better player than Drico some years ago. Simon Shaw instead of OConnell, my mother would pick a better team.

The comments following that article are hilarious. First one up being

"he must be having a laugh"

    -paul o connell, limerick, ireland

Unfortunately it very well might be the case that Ireland only get 4 starting players on the team. The Lions don't have a hope against Southern Hemisphere teams if they keep picking players on politics. Heck I would wager that some of those selected teams couldn't beat Ireland in 3 test matches.

Who gives a rats ass what any ex player/pundit thinks should be the lions first 15?
Decisions will be made in due course...Not by any of the above!!!

Indeed they are, but as a pundit he simply loses credibility with such a selection. i enjoy reading articles by leading pundits and ex-players, it is great, particularly considering the technicalities of the modern game of rugby. Its a shame that he marks his card like this, it shows a distinct lack of knowledge on the game....drico and o connell are not only mammoth players, but born leaders needed in a Lions XV taking on the boks.

Who the hell did he actually play for? I thought he was just a journo.

for me BOD is a cert for the team but I hope he's not captain, inspirational yes, but doesn't need the extra pressure. Stephen Jones is just an attention seeker..moron!

Life is full of wonderful surprises....who'd have thought that clown Jones had a sense of humour???

Henson at centreon a Lions Test side to face South Africa??? Why didn't he finish of the joke by naming Charlotte Church as hooker???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,446 ✭✭✭bugler

To be honest, everyone on that panel makes a tit of themselves in some way. Which just goes to show getting journos in groups and showering them with booze does not make for coherent results. Some of the choices at hooker are baffling.

The Times also couldn't spell the name of their best known rugby journo correctly. Rough old weekend for everyone concerned.

SJ: "In South Africa, at his best, I like Hines as much as I like O’Connell." Words fail me.

Guscott: "My dark horse is Nick Kennedy to do what Jeremy Davidson did to the Boks in 1997. To nick Matfield." Kennedy isn't near Jones or POC. In fact, even you didn't pick him in your team, Jeremy. And what the **** is that second sentence? Speak English?

Then we have David Walsh picking Rory Best to start. It might help if he was considered Ireland's first choice don't you think?

Most of them pick Croft for 6 - No.

Kenny Logan picks Matthew Rees at hooker. Did you watch the Wales v Ireland game, Kenny? (I'm actually wondering when this sh1te in happened) That's right, let's go into a series of games against possibly the best defensive lineout in the world with a ropey thrower at hooker.

    The best bit is:

"SJ: Before we all fall out, let’s go on to centres.
JG: The easy one for me to pick is O’Driscoll.
    KL: Definitely.
SJ: I wouldn’t have him in my Test
KL: Why would you not have him? Honestly, I am worried about you writing in the paper now.
SJ: I’ll carry on as best as I can.
KL: Come on, you can’t put that in there. You cannot write that."

Don't tell me they weren't all sozzled while doing this.
