Odd noise from a merc

Driving a merc e240 recently I have noticed an unusual noise/performance problem. When the car has been running at a low speed/idling in heavy traffic there is an almighty noise when attempting to bring it up to normal speed. The engine also seems sluggish. It lasts for a couple of minutes and then goes back to normal. Anyone know anything about it?

If it is an automatic it sounds like a problem I have been looking into recently on a family members s-class, you might want to look on some of the dedicated Mercedes forums.

The problem on the s-class is with the torque convector, really noticeable at low speed in the first two gears it can also happen at higher speeds. There is a whine, and vibration.

On the MB forums it seems to be a very common problem with a number of E classes manufactures around 2004.

The S-Class I mention is a 2004 model with on 55,000 miles on it and after some argument Mercedes have agreed to go 50-50 on the parts.

It is an occasional problem. I am also wondering if it is caused by fidgeting with the gear lever. If the gear lever is pulled from side to side it cause gear changes. I am inclined to do this when i am bored in slow moving traffic.

My da had the same problem with a 03 model.. Recond the box, torque convertor and re programmed gear box.. No change. Bought it from a main dealer and they had it for 8wks trying to sort it he had it for 3wks on and off..

Handed back and went with a different car.

Its a not a navy 03' bought recently by any chance:o
