ok so im 16 and my parents said theyll buy me a car for my 17th if i paid for insurance so that was a good deal, so i thought. insurance worked out to be E5000+ but my friend recently got a car and got on his mothers policy. he told me it was working out E5000 for him too until he got on her police for E1400

how would i go about doing this?? my mom says that you have to be over 18 but he is 17 and got it on his moms policy, both mothers are with AA

any help and past experience is much appreciated

    cheers

If you get a new car, and you put your mother down as the main driver she will start with 0 NCB if she already has another policy.

It should still be under €5k though.
(not exactly sure if this is possible, insurable interest etc. you may have to register car in mothers name?)

If you go as a named driver under your mothers current policy (i.e they'll give you her full NCD) it will be cheaper again.

    Hope that makes sense.

EDIT: Did it on Quinn for you, €1.8k on a 00 1 litre Polo, mothers new policy, assuming shes 40, has full license 10 years, TPFT.

You cant claim the NCB but, if your mother has been a named driver on someone elses policy you can claim x no of crash free named driver years.

    Might take 300-400 euro off

If she's down as the first driver; and isn't actually the first driver (e.g. you are) its fraudulent and the insurers will have grounds to not pay out if they can find out... unfortunately this is the way to get the biggest discount. Adding her as a second driver to the policy won't save anywhere near as much but is generally still cheaper than going solo.

Just concentrate on getting your full licence. It would have taken 800 euro (from 1800) off my policy if i had used my mams jeep. I used my dads commercial jeep and it only cost 800 euro on his policy, and when i got my full licence i got a cheque for 200 back in the post. :)

Get your full licence (it only took me 10 weeks and a few lessons on my provisional but i had been driving round fields since i was 12). Or get a van/commercial jeep.

you really need to shop around when you're looking for insurance! it costs alot more when your car is of higher value so perhaps if you got a cheapish car to start and then when you get your full license get a better car!!! and if you crash (which you will, everyone does) you moms insurance will go up!! hope i helped!

i would advise getting a commercial jeep , judging by the fact you called her mom instead of ma im going to guess your a d4/d6 type who got a quote for 5k when you entered bmw 3/5 series into the quinn website , if your a badgefag (thats the new word for it) and want a beamer go get a commercial x5 or something if you came up with 5 grand out of a small peugot or something your doing it wrong but consider a commercial jeep for cheap insurance (kia sorento, mitsubishi pajero, toyota landcruiser) etc...

Why does everyone on here give long-winded answers that dont actually even answer the question??? And then give advice like "buy a jeep" or "its illegal to do this".......

He just wants to know about the insurance and doesnt want a lecture about it!!!!

Basically just get your mother to sign the car over to her name and go as the main driver on the policy and you go as name driver. Its really straight forward and will save you a fortune.

 bit of a wild sweeping statement there.

Op try pass your test first, i know it's hard to wait but it will save you money. If your mother doesn't have a policy then put her as main driver and yourself as named

I think it is entirely OK for people to be warning that the OP might be invalidating his insurance.

My son just turned 17 is covered on my primera 2.2 dsl (named driver) for €940,

don't know about the AA but if your family are doing business with a broker they should be able to haggle cover in your own name for a 1.0 - 1.2 ltr for about €2K.

It's surprising the deal a broker can find if they think they are going to loose a customer.
