Which do you think would be better for one day? Like more to see etc! I have one night to spare on an interrailing trip and have no idea which to go to!!

Ljubljana is far nicer, Zagreb isn't the greatest city to be honest.

Ljubljana was featured on No Frontiers last week - you might be able to view the programme on the RTE website.

yeah i spent the day in Zagreb during the summer gone and it didnt leave an impression! I was never in the other place, but there are plenty of views to suggest it is nicer!

    Ljubljana ljubljana ljubljana! :)

Zagreb really isn't worth visiting imo, I stayed there for a day and a night last summer while interrailing, and we all would have rathered an extra day somewhere else.

If you have a day to spare, consider going on an adventure-day-trip kind of thing to Lake Bled while you're in Ljubljana. We did that after finding info in the Ljubljana tourist office, basically a people carrier picks you up from the city and takes you to this lake: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Bled

The lake itself is really pretty, and you have a while to swim or whatever, and then they take you up into the mountains to do whatever activities you've chosen. We did white-water rafting, which was fun, and canyoning, where you abseil and climb and slide all the way down this huge river canyon. It wasn't hugely expensive either compared to the prices you'd pay for similar stuff in Ireland, I think about 50-60 euro for a whole day doing stuff, including a 1-2 hour car journey each way. If you like adventure sports at all I'd definitely recommend it, and it makes a change from the usual boozing/sightseeing interrailing stuff!

Hey! I'm gonna be going to Lake Bled for four days after Ljubljana haha you have gotten me really excited now! Would four days be too long though? What other sort of activities can you do there? Can't wait :D

Okay, I haven't been to Ljubljana, so I can't compare the two, but I have been to Zagreb, and I loved it. Just in case the op was being put off, the city ain't a total dump...far from it.

What I loved was that there's the old town - which is very European, like Rome or Prague - and then the new town, which is a mixture of architecture from the 70's/80's/90's. I think it's very vibrant, despite the conflict.

Top sights for me were Ban Jelačić Square, St. Mark's church (the roof seems to be made of red, white and blue lego), the Zagreb funicular (shortest and most pointless cable car in the world), and the main Cathedral, which was burnt down and rebuilt (I think). Also, don't miss the firing of the cannon from Lotrščak Tower at midday, something the city's government has continued for over 100 years.

Finally, I could highly recommend a beer (specifically a Velbitsko) in Tolkien's House, a Lord of the Rings theme bar. If you end up going...enjoy!

Apologies for digging up an old thread, but I am in a similar conundrum to the OP, 5 years later.
What are your recent impressions of both cities?
    Many thanks in advance,
