RDF Questions and Regulations?

    Hi All

Is there an morarorium on recruitment within the RDF due to financial reasons or does the recruitment season only open for a short period?

I have seen the eye sight requirement stated as being 6/6 unaided, but i do not think this is correct. Can any one give the correct tolerance for unaided and aided eye sight.

Would a previous history of very mild asthma have an impact at medical?

What are the regulations on tattoos on the arms, specifically sleeve tattoos?

Anybody have any contact details for B Company, 58 Reserve Infantry Battalion, Letterkenny, Co.Donegal. Rockhill house is now closed and finner were not that helpful with information.

Thanks for the help in advance.

    T

As far as i know, theres is no moratorium on recruitment, but due to the length of the recruitment process, most units wouldn't be able to take on recruits at this stage in the year, as they wouldnt be ready in time for recruit training during the summer.

The eyesight requirements are definitely less than 6/6 unaided, but i dont know exactly what they are. Not really sure about your other questions.

I'm in 58Bn, I dont have a contact number for B Coy but I think another board member here is a member of the company so I'll leave it to him to answer that.

This isn't a definative answer but it may be of some benefit. The DF has three vision grades, grade 3 being the minimum allowed for general service (ie enlisting as a private soldier). To be eligible for a cadetship you must be a grade 1 and the following limits apply
Vision must be not less than 6/18 in each eye, corrected to not less than 6/6
in one eye and 6/9 in the other.

Now while I don't have the limits for grade 3 (ie the minimum accepted level you need ot enlist in the RDF) I myself am on the limit of what's acceptable and my prescription is -3.0 and -3.75. Hope that helps, The best way to find out would be to contact the unit you wish to join and ask them, alternatively you could contact your Brigade Manpower Office (this is for PDF recruitment but the standards are the same - best thing is try with the RDF unit first)
    Manpower Officer
    Headquarters 4 Western Brigade
    Custume Barracks,
    Athlone,
    Co Westmeath.

    Tel: 09064-21032

Regards recruitment, it is quite possible it's too late to join but get in contact, they may still take you or get your details sorted and paperwork sent off so you can have your medical etc completed for next September.
B Coy 58 RIB have their contact number listed as 074 9121933 on the Unit Locator on military.ie (http://www.military.ie/reserves/locator/index.htm) Reserve Bde HQ in Renmore is listed as 091-751156.

Iam in the 58th myself. You just missed recruitment Iam afraid.

A few Sgts went around the schools in Letterkenny this year and had an open day in Rockhill house itself.

A few people who joined with me wear glasses but still have some degree of being able to see.Iam not sure about how strict they are on the eye test as it wasent a problem for me.

As for tattoos,a few people have them and have to disclose that they have them in the medical but again I dont think it is a problem as a good few sgts have them on their lower arms.

We took on alot of recruits this year and their was talk of not letting all of them through as the numbers where to high.
