"Drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, one of the original members of US band Smashing Pumpkins, has left the group, it has been announced.

In a statement on the band's website, singer and founding member Billy Corgan said that he would "continue to write and record as Smashing Pumpkins". Chamberlin, who joined the alternative band in 1988, played on its recent 20th anniversary reunion tour. Corgan said the band plan to head into the studio this spring. Chamberlin played on all the Chicago band's albums except 1998's Adore.
Following the 2000 break-up of the band, Chamberlin joined Pumpkins frontman Corgan in the short-lived Zwan, before re-forming Smashing Pumpkins in 2005. The band released their latest album, Zeitgeist, in 2007."

-what the hell??!! none of the members seem to know if they want to come or go-how is Billy gonna continue on his own and with those two replacement muppets??!! nonsense!

Chamberlin was the only good thing about post-Mellon Collie Pumpkins. Game over, Billy.

I wonder if the three new Pumpkins are actually going to record this time or if it'll be Billy and a drum machine, which mightn't be so bad as long as it's not a super big rock album. But anyway it'll be interesting to see how the mind of Billy Corgan justifies being The Smashing Pumpkins all by himself.

In other crazy Pumpkins news, James Iha's in a band with a guy from Hanson.

Might be Billy plus a whole batch of new people - he uses and disposes band members at will. I wouldn't mind seeing Ginger Reyes stick around though, she's pretty cool.

In the mind of Billy Corgan, he always has been Smashing Pumpkins himself. You probably know yourself how arrogant the man is. He only sees the rest as mere support players (although he always did seem closer to Jimmy than any of the others.)

Oh how the mighty have fallen. :(

Ah I wouldn't go that far. Adore is by far my favourite album, and the only one not to feature Chamberlin. But I do agree that he'll be a huge loss - he's a brilliant drummer.

Personally I think the first line in the statement on the band's website says it all:

"The SMASHING PUMPKINS' guitarist, singer, songwriter and founding member Billy Corgan has announced that drummer Jimmy Chamberlin has left the group."

There's the implication there that Billy has most of the bases covered by himself anyway, being the guitarist, singer and songwriter, and sure being the "founding member" implies that the band is his anyway.

I was really unimpressed at the RDS gig last Feb when Billy kept pointing to Jimmy and saying "Jimmy Chamerlin, everybody" and then leading the audience in mad clapping...and then totally ignoring the other two "members". He didn't mention them once. Poor form.

Without Jimmy (and James IMO) I don't hold out much hope.

I would, I found Adore to be dreadful. Different strokes... ;)

Chamberlin brings out the best in Corgan's music, be it the Pumpkins or Zwan, he's a phenominal drummer. Adore lacked any sort of energy or drive, Jimmy's the man.

exactly...all good things etc etc... without the full lineup...i dont care what anyone says...its not smashing pumpkins...you can see a serious lack of chemistry and spark with the new lineup...so d'arcy and iha did have major role in the overall vibe whether they actually wrote anything or not....one person does not a band make....ah well at least their is the siamese dream box set to look forward to...

He probably got on the junk again...

As for pumpkins, I still listened to the new stuff, some good rock in there. Corgan, however is a diva. e.gif

Well I don't think Adore was meant to be full of energy. It was a sad album, written by Billy during a really crappy time in his life. I think it's a beautiful fantastic album, both lyrically and musically.

So "different strokes" is right! :) We can definitely agree about Chamberlin being a phenomenal drummer though.

There's a Siamese Dream box set coming out? I was previously unaware of this piece of information, and will now frantically search the interwebs for more details of it. Thanks for the heads up.

    Good work, rovert.

Now, I'd also argue that Adore is the best Pumpkin's album by far, oddly enough because it sounds far less indulgent to me than something like Melon Collie. And I really don't think that disc has aged a day, either. Unlike a lot of the Pumpkins other great stuff, Adore still sounds like it was made yesterday rather than in 199x.

    Anybody heard from D'Arcy lately?

+100.....fantastic album, that Chamberlin didnt play on, so meh. I love it when bands bring out albums that alienate most of their fanbase, shows theyve got balls.

Jimmy is the man, Zeitgeist was superb from a drum point of view IMO.

I think Billy should walk away from the Smashing Pumpkins now, if at all possible. Smashing Pumpkins Inc., guitar hero, visa ads, wrestling, 10 different versions of the album, so so live shows, law suits, fighting with fans, members in/members out........its all going wrong.

I thought the solo album he released was absolutely excellent, less so the poetry and dithering that preceded it. I reckon he needs to stay busy, so, into the studio and make something new IMO. Call it Billy Corgan, not The Smashing Pumpkins.

I agree that Adore is a brilliant album- very different to everything else. So sad that Jimmy's gone, he was brilliant on Zeitgeist, loved Doomsday Clock!

Noooooooooooo, its just not right. Love all his stuff. Lets hope for more dedicated time to Jimmy Chamberlin Complex Trio!

Chamberlin and Corgan took centre stage at the RDS when the Pumpkins played here a few years ago and it was the worst gig ever, hopefully this will put an end to the face Billy Corgan has turned the once great band into....

Post Mellon Collie Pumpkins? You mean Adore - the album they recorded without him??

Before returning with him of course on Machina.

It'll be a bit of a joke if he continues to record under the name Smashing Pumpkins when there's only himself left of the original lineup. Pumpkins are finished Billy, time to move on.

Agreed, time to wind it up, Zeitgeist was mostly pants anyway, just doesnt compare to Mellon Collie, Adore and MACHINA. He should resurrect his solo career, his FutureEmbrace album was ok I thought.

Maybe Billy could recruit a new "super drummer".

*Neil Peart joins the smashing pumpkins!*

He even looks a bit like Jimmy

I dunno. Take a look at King Crimson; Robert Fripp has been the only constant member since they started in the late 60's. They're still pouring out amazing music.

Adore the greatest album? who are you ppl!!!!

Siamese Dream all the way!! Adore is a great album i do love it. but its not a specific pumpkins sounding album its more a branch out - a side project.

but yea billy was always a headcase and he'll continue to beat the donkey as he's afraid to get out of his zone.

anyone ever see the docu on ch4 yeeears ago whne he goes back to his hometown and shows the routes of the band. very cool.

Yeah I agree, it sounds more like a Billy solo album....but I still love it. Maybe not their greatest album, but definitely my favourite, it that makes any sense! :D:o
