    This is just a basic overview as you're clearly looking for general info?

    Best board for beginners is a foam board, which you should be using at a beginner's surfing course. Do not buy a board until you have done some beginner's lessons or borrowed from a friend.

    Also, a great beginners board is: a bodyboard. Before you even surf, go bodyboarding. Get used to waves & board control.

    Experienced surfers will used shortboards for tricks. Do not use unless you're skilled / experienced. Only any good in decent surf.

    For smaller surf and good sets of waves, a longboard may be best.

    Calm waters are best explored using an inflatable device, called a lilo.
