Whats it like to run? What annual expenses does it have, how much is a service, tax, fuel economy(if any), tyres. Any other nigly things go wrong with some of them? Thanks in advance.

I had a 99 4.2 quattro (facelift 310bhp) for a while. Great car, very quick, safe & refined. From memory, I got around 250 miles from a tank (€90ish to fill) Mine was on 18" 245 PZero Rossos, I think they were around €200 each. Tax is €1550+pa. I had a few sensors go, not much else. Servicing was expensive though, it always seemed to be time to do something. Be aware that reliability will be nowhere near as good as a Lexus. Lots of toys, TV, nav, solar sunroof, power/heated seats front & rear. What it didn't have was personality - it reminded me a bit of terrestrial LearJet. My gf christened it 'the accountant'.

Have a diesel golf now, and wondering if I should make the change. Kinda woke up this morning and looked up a few on carzone. Cheap to buy an older model. Neds alot of cash though to run/sevice/maintain. Tryting to work out if it will bankrupt me. I do about 450 miles a week, and a full tank at the moment goes for about 600 miles.

    How secure is your employment?

I have its VW cousin (based on the VAG D1 platform, a steel version of the A8s Alu D3 platform for all accounts), service wise the "Long Life" service preformed at 55k with 2 additons at my request (rear middle brake light and Fuel Filter) was EUR900 inc VAT and Labour. I consider that quite reasonable for main dealer service (New Beetle was EUR600 with no extra parts/changes for comparison).

However the VW garage wanted EUR1200 for brake pads (all round) change. I did it myself for EUR300ish.

Tax obviously is by CC (and nothing to do with the car) and similarly fuel economy is engine driven. I get upto 680km per tank, around 27mpg if any effort to drive "normally" put in at all. This is the V10TDI, but I suspect the A8's V8TDI to be even more frugal and the A8 is lighter regardless, helping economy.

....mmm, got me to thinking: what would an LS400/LS430 be like to own ? Mad on juice ? I'm already paying big tax, and servicing is like-for-like.

So, what can ye tell me ?

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Self employed. Still wondering how secure, so I'll get back to you on that one. Idea has kinda been shot down by herself though. Oh I wish we weren't saving for a house/wedding. It's an expensive machine to run, but I think I could manage!

Your crazy, an A8 would be a nightmare for 450 miles a week, you'd be filling twice a week, if not more - weekends etc.

    What about a 730D.

I haven't been watching these for a while now, but that's amazing. They've obviously just become very good value for money!

It's not the only only one at that money now either. The only thing is are these cars DIY friendly?

S-Class Diesels are coming in at around the same money too for same year...tempting. But it would be like getting married...for the 2nd time. You're stuck with it for good.:D

Are you doing the right thing? The car would be cheaper to run than the average woman. :D

Christ that is some value! Am I right in thinking that would have been €100k+ when new?

Sorry Unkel, but I think you're dreaming now pricing a six years older, previous model, at €5k less than that. No offence.

Sorry to go back off topic. Blame Anan1!
