Social welfare doesn't count the hours you work - they deal in days. Even if you work just one hour in a day, you would be considered employed for that day.
So if your days have been cut, and you are working now just 3 days (or less) a week, well then yes, you are possibly entitled to make a claim for the days you are unemployed.

yes you can apply for dole on a casual worker basis (not sure the exact name of it). Basically you get these yellow cards, with a box for each day on it. You get your employer to sign it for each day - worked x amount of hours, didn't work etc. Then you send these in to SW weekly. Its a bit of a pain, and sometimes your allowance can be late, and if your employer doesn't sign it blah blah - anyway its messy and a pain in the arse, but at least its available.

but having said that, there is no guarantee you actually get CASH! it depends on the money you get paid - put it this way, you won't get more from them than you would FT on the dole. its worked out pro rata, and if you get paid a decent wage, they are not going to give you the balance on your normal wage. But they would give you credits in that situation.

I last got this benefit when I was temping, on weeks I was only temping a couple of days I got benefit for the remaining days, but I think the absolute maximum I ever got was when I did a 2 day week and got about €80 from the dole for the other 3 (total, not per day)- not even close to what I would have got if I'd worked! And I was only on €13 an hour!

but yes there is a benefit out there - so def go and enquire about it. At the very least get the credits for it so that if your hours are cut further you won't be stung if you need to go on the dole.
