The term "Homophobia"

Does anyone else find this a little odd? I mean, a phobia is to be afraid of something, like Arachnophobia or Coulrophobia. We can imagine people being agitated by spiders, dusting away cobwebs compulsively. But Homophobia? Are people afraid of the gays under the bed when they go to sleep? Checking the closet for gays, just in case! :p

Of course! Sleep with one eye open too. Surprise anal is not pleasant.

    ho⋅mo⋅pho⋅bi⋅a
/ˌhoʊməˈfoʊbiə/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [hoh-muh-foh-bee-uh] –noun

unreasoning fear of or antipathy toward homosexuals and homosexuality.

    Origin:
    1955–60; homo(sexual) + -phobia

    Related forms:
    ho⋅mo⋅pho⋅bic, adjective

It's a new word, probably brought about via popular culture rather than academia just taking the commonly known word 'phobia' and sticking it on at the end. Somewhat misrepresentative alright.

Not looking for any serious discussion about it, just a humorous slant on it. :pac:

Pighead was once in a relationship with a girl who he wanted to break up with but he wanted to break up without breaking the poor girls heart.

So he acted weird around her for days until finally she asked what was wrong. "Pigheads got Cacophobia and being around you is very hard for him"

"Awwww poor Pighead, is that some sort of fear of commitment thing you've got going on? My uncle was the same, being in a relationship caused him to hyperventilate and one day he hyperventilated so much he exploded and died. Some say the women he was with was so beautiful he couldn't handle being with her. Is that what you have Pighead. Thats kinda sweet."

Looked her in the eye, started to cry and kissed her goodbye. Never seen her again. It was a beautiful break-up. Almost Hollywood like. Sometimes Pighead thinks about that break-up and prays to God that she never looked up the meaning of Cacophobia

Beer is a good cure for cacophobia. As long as the dosage is high enough.

It's a temporary crutch at best, and the comedown when you see what you're in bed with is a killer. :pac:

No dice. As well as being Cacaphobic, Pighead's also Potophobic. Tough break some would say.

Emptiness is loneliness, and loneliness is cleanliness, and cleanliness is godliness, and god is empty; just like me.

Quoting Smashing Pumpkins makes me check to see if you are under my bed or in my closet.

I'm sorry, I don't have any pop culture quotations relating to closets. That's me done.

Having an irrational fear of an entire genus of bipedal hominids does seem a little silly.

A phobia is an "irrational fear". Rather than having a deep, intense fear of something, you could just have an irrational amount of fear. As in, you are more afraid than is rational.

If you're walking down a dark alleyway in a bad part of town and have forgotten your glasses then a dose of fear is healthy and rational. If you're in your bedroom with the windows shut and the doors locked then the same amount of fear would be irrational.

Homophobia as an irrational fear of homosexual people because any fear at all would be irrational. Unless the gay man has a big sharp knife and is demanding your wallet. But then your fear is probably not based on what the man does in his bedoom with his life partner.

Roy Chubby Brown admitted to being a homophobe. He said he was afraid of a cock up the arse.

We used to be Homo Erectus and now we all are Homo Sapiens so we're all homos which makes homophobia even crazier.
