Quick Question?

I am just getting my head around DTT, bear with me:o so as Ireland has decided to use H.264/MPEG-4 AVC as our encoding standard, and this supports HD broadcasts.

Will our DTT be HD and will RTÉ broadcast in HD? Is the current broadcasts being received by our members in HD or SD?

And if RTÉ are not going to broadcast it is good to know that the system is future proofed for when they do.

Am I getting my neck around it or am I totally off?

It is MPEG4 SD for the foreseeable future. But the move to HD will be easier than the UK as nearly all MPEG4 equipment is HD capable as of now (there wont be a need for a second upgrade for anyone execpt the HD television itself!).

MPEG4 broadcasts use the UHF bandwidth more efficiently than MPEG2 which is important when broadcasting HD.

Irish DTT will be broadcast in SD.

Two further multiplexes are to be awarded after analogue switchoff in 2012 and may carry HD channels with the possibility of the newer more efficient DVB-T2/MPEG-4 standard being used (this is the standard chosen to broadcast terrestrial HD in the UK). Our standard DVB-T/MPEG-4 is currently used in France to broadcast their HD channels.
