Do you trust a garage supplied HPI?

As the title says. I'm looking at buying and the dealer says they have done a HPI. Are these trust worthy or should I splash out the few quid and do one myself to be safe?

can you not call hpi to confirm the details? I'd only trust it if it came from the horses mouth

I'd probably do my own HPI, but more fundamentally, if a garage was doing things in such a way that I felt they may be lying about the HPI, I'd be walking away.

What's making you distrust the garage?

That would be the same as me doing the HPI as I doubt they'd confirm a HPI has been done and let me know the results that someone else has paid for.

The garage looks legit and I've seen several places advertising that it's HPI clear. I don't distrust the garage in anyway, they have ebay feedback that's good. I just wanted to see what people though of garages saying HPI is clear and if they would still do their own reguardless.

If I said the car was HPI clear, I'd only say so if it were true. If it's a well established garage, I see no reason for distrust. Get it in writing if you are that worried.

As they say, if in doubt...... Do your own HPI:P

I'd do my own too, last time I checked HPI did an RAC check, which is the same thing, for £5.

That's what I was thinking. If the garage is legit, and they look it, why would they lie about something as important as being HPI clear.

And for the sake of a few £s I think I may aswell do one myself. Just to remove the tiny worry I'd have about being supplied one by the seller.

Is it English? I'm assuming you don't know the dealership, and just for peace of mind I would get it checked. Best of luck with the new motor too.;)

If the garage carried out a HPI check it should then be furnished with a HPI report. Thats what they paid for. Ask to see the HPI report and make sure you cross reference it with the vehicle in question (chassis number reg plate etc).
Not all HPI reports will tell everything if in doubt get a second one done from an alternative company.
If its a car you are buying in the UK get the AA to check over it. They look at everything and do it well even down to the minute stone chip.
I work in the car industry (no sales) and every day i get english cars in with all the hidden troubles that just were not checked and they cause continual heart ache every couple of weeks.
Cars that are still under manufacturers warranty are great to buy but $$$$$ when you start venturing into the 2005-2000 bracket it needs close inspection.
I think you would prefare to spend a couple of quid on a check to be told to walk away rather than buying a possible lemon

If the HPI check is done correctly - it should have a date on it. You (or anyone) has 30 days from the report date to re-check the HPI report. At least, I had when I did mine 2 years ago.
Anyway, the HPI report is not the be all and end all for a car. It should only be a finance type of check that you do when satasified with your car. As the poster said above, a HPI check does not tell all about a car. However, they are a fairly good testemant or measuring stick, if you like, to the honesty of the previous owner, if you know what I mean.
Anyway, I presume that you are at the stage where you are happy with the car and have made the decision to buy, so best of luck with the new motor.
On your original question, by the way, I would trust the garage HPI personally because the garage stands to loose a lot more by being caught at fraud (selling a falce HPI report) than the cost of the HPI report - Why would they bother?
Anyway what type of car is it?
