I fully endorse celebrities who go absolutely bat**** insane for no apparent reason. Far more interesting than the celebrities who do not go bat**** insane. This appearance is up there with Crispin Glover for pure deranged genius.

I still believe it is an elaborate hoax though, and hopefully the documentary that emerges out of it (directed by Casey Affleck) will have all the hardy lulz I expect.

Yup. I heard this and reckon it's the most plausible. I can't imagine the guy went from an intelligent adult to a Scroobius Mong wannabe overnight.

    Big fat hoax.

he's playing a wierdo so he can get loads of news stories and forum threads on the net to promote his latest movie.. good plan really!!

by the way it's called 'two lovers' and's based on a class short story called 'white nights' by Dostoevsky - looks promising!

tbh Letterman was a bit of a d**k during the interview. Poor Joaquin looked very uncomfortable during the interview.

Hoax or not let him explore it, see where it gets him. I loved his character Lucius in The Village.

I'd love if it wasn't him behind the beard.

That was my thought too! It would be great if it were a bum they picked off the street who in the next few months attends functions as Phoenix.

I saw the village (was that the name) unfortunately so I don't really care what happens to him.

I've always liked him and I'm hoping it is for a documentary because that could be as hilarious as Borat if it's done right. And if it's not all an act then I'll genuinely feel sorry for him because he's had a bit of a weird life and it is plausible he kinda just lost it. And if that's the case and everyone is taking the piss out of him when it's clear that he has mental problems(Ben Stiller, Letterman) that's well out of order.

Funny I thought the same myself.

If this is real I really feel bad for him during that interview. Sure there is the argument "why go on a talk show and not talk" but Letterman stone cold ripped the p1ss out of him and the audience was clearly laughing *at* him.

He looks like a Jim Henson creation, can just picture him with the Muppet Show band:). I imagine it was all a show for publicity. It reminded me of the gmtv interview Eamonn Holmes had with mad David Blaine or the one with Michael Parkinson and ignorant cow Meg Ryan -that was awful.

Slowly removing his sunglasses to reveal rolling dazed eyes we see that his nose is more orange than people first imagined. His mouth pulls back to reveal flat teeth without contour and a leering grin splits his lips. The smile continues to stretch the skin of his face right back to his ears.

    Joaquin Phoenix is Dr. Teeth.

Horf! I'm very much looking forward to this movie, white nights is one of my favourite short stories of all times. So it is.

That interview was very hard to watch, the crowd kept just laughing at him, wasn't very nice. The interviewer was just reacting to the crowd I guess.

It was rather cruel and i have never liked Lettermans style of interviewing, but it did seem a bit contrived on Pheonix's part, as if he was playing a role...but if he has dumped Hollywwod then this apperance was ill advised, why go on Letterman if you're truely done with Hollywood?...maybe it's in his contact for the new film to promote it, but everything he does will not be about the movie but his new "direction".

    He's no Jim Carrey.

His first gig in Miami went down a storm. Surprisingly good, considering the poor quality.

This is a VERY high risk manouver on Joaquin's part, lemme explain...i think he is acting a part, Joaquin will play himself, an actor who decides to dump Hollywood to persue hip hop music and all that entails. Lots of cameo apperances etc, Letterman was in on it and thus that tv apperance will be in the Mocumentary.

But here is the problem, i foresee this concept nd project to be ill advised and will backfire in spectular fashion. I foresee the movie will bomb, a total turkey and end up being a total joke,,,critics will pan it "worst movie in history" etc.

But here's the interesting part, it'll destroy Joaquin's career, he'll be a laughing stock and in the end he'll end up doing FOR REAL what the movie is about, dumping Hollywood and growing a beard and end up alone in some shack in the woods.

    Thus art will imitate life.
