Permit Renewal Question

    Hi all,

Bit of a funny situation here.

I got my first provisional licence in January 2006, which of course ran out last year.

I actually moved to the UK in late 2006, and spend my time between the two countries, so I believe I am still eligible to hold in Irish Learners Permit.

I have been learning to drive in the UK, took and failed my first test this morning (1 serious fault - taking a bend a bit too fast, otherwise good with 5 minors/driver faults). I will be back in Ireland at the beginning of April for a week, and with my next test booked for the 15th I'm keen to get some practice in. My parents are happy to put me on their insurance, the only problem is, of course, the lack of a licence valid in Ireland.

    So... my question...

If I make a renewal application in person, how long would the permit take to arrive? Can I drive while I'm waiting for it, bearing in mind I've already had one provisional?

    Thanks!

Some times you can get it done in person. Some times it will take a week to 10 days. Really depends on the where you are , and who you get at the counter.

Could you post in the application ?

I would post it in, the only problem is getting my hands on a form over here. I would have to get one posted to me, then post it back. Time saving would be minimal.

If I could apply in person and then drive while waiting for it (or get it there and then - wishful thinking?) then I'd be happy. Hopefully I'll be on for a pass mid-April in UK, just looking for that week's worth of practice really.

The forms are available to download from your local ( or where you intend to apply) motor tax office website, You will need to enclose 2 X recent passport sized photos a check for €15.00 and your most recent license! I would use your parents address they may not send it to the UK! I got one recently in 3 days from posting mine ;)

Donegalfella you're right about the label unfortunately some motor tax offices have forgotten about it and have it available for download from their websites ;)

    Here's one example: http://www.corkcoco.ie/co/pdf/359577970.pdf

I'm going to ring around some of the offices and see who can do it fastest, then fly over (airline staff, nice and cheap) and go do it in person. Seems the easiest way. Well ok, maybe not the easiest but likely the quickest.

I'm assuming that you don't *have* to go to the office nearest the address on your licence?

Would the licence number stay the same? Just to give to the insurance company?
