Does anyone know what is nursing like as a career? I have been checking it out and all the info i found was how to get into it but i would like to know what the work is like. I know it probably has some dirty work involved but i used to clean hotel bedrooms which was a nightmare but sick people has some excuse.
Is it a good thing to get into during the recession? Are there jobs? Pay?

Jobs are drying up in nursing bigtime.

You will end up with back problems.

You will be bullied by a fat menopausal woman at some point.

You will be the sh*t on everyones shoe at some point at work.

You will recieve constant criticism from patients and visitors.

    You will be constantly tired.

You will miss all your friends and families birthday celebrations.

You will miss out on nights out.

You will feel left out on the social scene because you are too tired or working.

But it is a very very rewarding career if you get in the right strand and can develop a thick skin and a good sense of humour.

Being a nurse isn't about swanning around looking pretty, its a lifestyle choice not a career

In nursing they are as accountable as doctors for the care they give to their patients. It is not enough for a nurse to follow a doctors instructions blindly without knowing the benefits or otherwise of the course of treatment they are giving the patients in their care. The nurses are accountable directly to an Bord Altranais for any adverse outcome of any patient in their care.
So far there hasn't been any big news story like the Neary case in the nursing profession but, given the tightness of money and resources in the health sector it is only a matter of time.
Every sector in health is working at more than 100% capacity as it is an don't allow enough time for training and updating skills.
The person affected will probably lose their registration and ability to work in their chosen profession. They probably wont be able to work at anything.
Given the other drawbacks in the profession nursing is not for the work-shy or fainthearted and is certainly not the glamour role protrayed in Mills and Boons novels.
Nurses generally stick to areas they know best and are very reluctant to move to new areas because of this risk.

    Hi,

Can anyone tell me what working in A & E would be like?
Can you work in this area straight away after graduating?
