Hi all - I'm going to be buying a new (well 2nd hand!) car next month. Need a diesel cause doing high enough milege. Prices seem to be quite good at the moment and worked out what I can afford. When I look in the buy and sell / autotrader etc in my budget I have these options:

    -Mazda 6 (2006)
    -Honda Accord (2006)
    -Toyota Avensis (2006)
    -VW Passat (2006)
    -Ford Mondeo (2007)

Again these are all diesels. I've gone through parkers and there isn't that much to choose between the top 4 review wise. Know the 5th isn't quite as good but would be 1 year newer so might level it out.

If you were me, which of these would you go for, assuming they were all in the same condition / milege etc?

    Cheers

    Hi,
    I'm selling a Mazda 6 (05) if you're interested - not a diesel though.
I can certainly vouch that its a great car -haven't driven the rest to be able to compare. Note that new Mazda 6 shape came out in 07.

    Accord for me too.

    then, in the following order:

    Mondeo - great, but depreciates.
Mazda6 - should be reliable - nice looking
Passat - doesn't seem to have great reliability based on what I've read on this forum
Avensis - Avensis owners strike on today

If I had the money it would be an Accord too... the 220 model.
Would you not look at buying a high spec golf up the north?
I'm in the market for a TDI Golf or Passat myself as I'm doing big mileage...
Any recommendations as to car dealers up the north or in the UK to deal with?

I think I'd be thinking (and wanna check this and hence the question)
    - Accord
    - Mazda 6
    - Passat
    - Avensis
    - Mondeo

Thinking is need something reliable - thats only reason why Avensis on that list at all! Otherwis if going on books for me be accord or mazda 6.

Honda, Ford & Mazda, in that order for me.

While the mazda would usually be top of the list, i think the 6diesel had reliabilty issues. Having never driven the diesel avensis i hated the petrol, in both shapes to drive.

The accord would be a good one then the passet 2L tdi.

    best of luck

just checked and while most of them are close enough in terms of MPG and emissions the Mazda 6 is in emissions group E. The rest are in C. That alone means the tax will be €310 higher. And who knows the car tax might even go up in the budgets.

suppose one other thing to think about is what the new price would have been. While this doesn't mean more expensive is better - it does seem to add in with what most are saying:

    Accord - 41k
    Mazda 6 - 34k
    Passat - 34k
    Avensis - 29k
    Mondeo - 28k

    1) Accord

    2) Mondeo

    3) Mazda 6

    3) Passat

The mazda 6 diesel has its own expensive problems that would put me off, the avensis...zzz...the passats are nice but they are not as reliable as the reputation suggests. You dont seem to really rate the mondeo but try one. They are a great car and ultra reliable. If it was a nice spec mondeo like a titanium x it'd tempt me over the accord. There is a really good 2.2 diesel in the mondeo too

If it's new shape Mondeo I'd probably plug for that - depending on spec etc. Accord a close second (note that an Executive model will have a v high spec). Mazda would be third if it were not for (true?) stories of dodgy engines. Passat and Avensis - nah.

All the cars mentioned are pre-08 cars so will be taxed based on capacity and not emmissions ;)
