Going through airport security with liquids

    Hello all

I am leaving a country in asia where I can get really cheap booze and want to bring some home in my hand luggage. The only snag being when I land in Heathrow I land in Terminal 1 and depart from Terminal 3. This is like going from one side of town to another. As I go through security at Terminal 3, will they confiscate my bottles of drink off me and make me throw it in a bin, even though it was bought in the duty free when departing on my first flight.

I know I can reclaim my suitcases in Heathrow and place the drink in my luggage but its a lot of hassle.

Thanks for your help. If I get the drink home ok, I will throw a cocktail party for all boards.ie users :-)

I would say 90% of booze confiscated at security is exactly the way you have described it, most people forget about it though and its not until they see it thrown in the bin it dawns on them.

You might be able to check a seperate bag in at the gate whenyou board your flight in Asia that gets transfered through, just a thought, other than that, you have a problem I think.

I had to give away a bottle of scotch recently in Heathrow for the same reason even though it was in a sealed bag from the duty free they wouldn't let me through as it was from outside the EU. My bags had been booked all the way through so i couldn't put it into my checked baggage. I gave it to the girl at the Aer Lingus check in desk!!

I was in the same situation last summer but was prepared. Before leaving asia i flattened 2X 2litre plastic water bottles into the suitcase and then bought the whiskey in duty free. Once I arrived in heathrow and cleared security I found a quiet spot and poured the drink into the plastic bottles and stuck them back into the suitcase. Last thing i wanted was a bottle to get smashed by ryanair groundhandlers and my clothes getting destroyed. Its a bit of hassle but worth it.

BTW: The UK customs hav a limit of 200 ciggaretes per person while in Ireland its 400. Thankfully some officers use discretion.

never knew that FR flew out of LHR normally they fly from LGW/LTN&STN.

As for HM customs they have no right to take duty free off you as you are a transiting pax where your ultimate destination is another country where alcohol&tobaco limits vary.

I have done the Asia--LHR route a couple of times and walked through with no problems.

I think any confiscation would be more to do with the security restrictions than customs.

Sorry you're right. I flew out from heathrow but returned via Gatwick.

I would have thought customs had the right to take it off me as i was technically entering their country. I wasnt exactly a transiting passenger in their view as i had to exit the baggage hall, and check in as normal through the public area.

Sorry when you said LHR i thought that you where returning via LHR i know what mean by having to go through customs.

You could have allways shown them your onward ticket to Dub
(not that it would make much differance).

its there gestapo type security that you have to watch ouy for
