    Hi everybody,

Quick question. My mam is in New York at the moment. Can she buy a 16GB 3G IPhone from the Apple Shop (or some other electronics shop) without having to sign up to some kind of contract?

And if she can, when I get this IPhone back here can I put my O2 PAYG SIM into it?

Thanks in advance for any answers and apologies if this has been covered before.

    Ciarán

    Simple answer - no.

Technically, yes, but it would need to be jailbroken/unlocked first.

Currently AT&T have just started selling the 3G iphone without a contract in the US; http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iziarLeqoaFEwYmCmZOfLjEoUwJgD9719VH80

Also at the moment if you can purchase a phone with 2.1 OS preloaded it can be jailbroken and unlocked. Also it is not possible to tell which OS is preloaded int he shop. But I reckon that it is only a matter of time before 2.2 is unlockable.

Technically you could buy a speakeasy one from O2. Also with the pound still in the loo, it is much cheaper to purchase an iphone in the UK than in Ireland and the US....

    I stand corrected.

Stock-clearance for the new iPhone, no doubt.

I wouldn't bother using a PAYG SIM in an iphone, as they'll absolutely rape you on the data charges.
