The Tesco plan

It seems like the first instinct of most people when it comes to zombie outbreaks is to head to Tesco, or any other discount superstore. Main reason is for supplies. You'll have tons of food to wait out the problem.

I'm wondering how viable that is though. A lot of food in superstores is fresh. Milk, meat, veg and frozen. If the power stays up you could last it out but if there is no power and no fridge freezers all that food is gone leaving you only with packaged/tinned food.

You will also probably not have the option to cook your frozen food (unless tescos are doing a deal on BBQs pre-outbreak), you'll have no fuel for a fire and no way to evacuate smoke if you did have fuel. That means all your frozen food is either useless or at worst dangerous.

There is a lot of food in a supermarket, but maybe not as much as we all original might think and when your sharing that food with all the other people that had the same idea it's quickly going to lead to real problems.

deli counter/bakery ovens that operate on gas. gas will continue to flow unless: a) someone shuts down the mains b) there's a leak c) there's no gas left in the national system
ovens that work on electricity, [tesco sell microwave ovens] then get yourself a portable generator.

other than that, go to the loading bay, see if you can cut a hole in the shutters big enough for some air duct to face through [most stores have ducted A/C, go rip some off the roof - i will not go into 'the many uses of rope' in this post] then go to [potentially] petrol station out front, or just siphon from the carpark any fuel that you need to burn stuff.

cooking ain't the problem. its the hundreds of other people that will show up looking for help that are; and the lack of weapons. better pray that tescos are having a blowout sale on chainsaws.

They probably already have a generator, if you know the shop and turn much of the electrical appliances off (think of all those fridges/freezers/ventilation they'll suck up any amount of power rapidly) you could get maybe a week or two out of it if it's full. Do you really think something as big and complicated as a national gas network could run unattended? I wouldn't be surprised if it would be shut down as a safety measure should the plant be over run.

That will be the big problem. If you have children outside crying to come in people are going to break and open the doors. You'll quickly end up with too many people, not enough food and a horde of hungry zombies outside.

Strangely enough, I've targeted my local supervalu as my stronghold. For the sole reason of great location. Situated inside a shopping complex with a massive roll down shutter, and only one back entrance for deliveries. Surrounded on all sides by 10 foot spiked gates. Farly large with a second floor full of managerial offices and a large yard out back which is very well closed off.

Only problem is power, hopefully they'll invest in solar paneling before the next major outbreak. Itchy... Tasty....
