    Hi guys,

My question, is there a way to limit one's time on the internet each day. i.e. when I'm at work I spend so much time on the internet and it's getting to me!

So is there a way to only have the internet working between 1 and 2 o' clock and so on? or only be able to use the internet for a max of 2 hours and than it wont work anymore when I've reached my total time?

    Thanks in advance,

    Martin

    Self control?

You could ask your IT people to restrict your access to certain sites or to restrict access to certain times but they won't be too happy if you've asked them to restrict access to between 12 and 2 for example and you come along a week later at 4 PM asking for your access back because you need to do a Google search.

Site restriction may be your best option.

Good grief OP, for someone who supposedly spends so much time on the net I would have thought you'd have figured out how to use it by now. Type "limit internet access time" into google and you'll get millions of hits.

ask the person who sits beside you to set the password without telling it to you. This will limit your access time and if you really need access for business purposes they can give the password to you

I think the most worrying thing here is the fact that your are posting online to find out how to limit your internet usage.

I'll ask the boss instead then.

Wow I have to say I'm really impressed with all yer well structured answers, so much for all the 'know alls' that probably sour this forum every day trying to out do the next person.

    I asked a no-nonsense question, just looking for a no-nonsense reply.

And the funny thing is some of ye or probably AT WORK POSTING A SMART REPLY

To the 'IT' guys out there if ye don't know the answer why show you're ignorance in replying!!!

I'm a QS, if someone asked me 'how do I get rid of an under preforming contractor' would I say 'well ya shouldn't have taken him on in the first place'

Do you think they'd be impressed!!

Chill out the lot of ye.

Of course it's possible to limit your internet access, but the question is, how are you going to control that limit? I mean, let's say you install an application that stops you browsing the web outside of 12-2....but then you get the urge for some porn, or to check your mail, or whatever.....itch.....itch.....itch......*scratch*.

Alternatively you're looking at talking to your IT department.

One thing that works for me: Close your browser down.

We do know the answer, Its just funny to see someone asking a silly question

Go to tools > restrict access
    or Use self control
    or Plug out the cable
    or Read a book
    or Do some work

I can't see anything when I go to tools about restricting access, I'm using mozilla, maybe there a difference between programs??

I'm not an 'IT guy' but I can understand when they get annoyed when users are just too lazy to find answers to questions themselves. Type 'restrict internet access time' into google and you'll get loads of hits eg

hblock, most of the programmes that set the limits are set on the proxy server, which is controlled by your IT guys at work - there are a number of free tools, but I'd be a bit embarrassed asking IT to set this, as it would just flag to the entire company that you're dossing a lot - not a great thing to be advertising.

If you're on a corporate network, one idea might be to remove the proxy settings in your browser. In Firefox this is under Tools/Options/Advanced/set how I connect to the internet (or something like that). Most browsers will have something similar, look around. The next bit depends on how internet access is setup in your company, but most will have 3 or 4 buttons saying "no proxy, automatic proxy, manual proxy". There'll probably be info in the automatic or manual proxy areas. Select no proxy instead (but don't delete any info in the other areas).

This still requires some willpower, but when you have "no proxy" set, you will still be able to access internal company sites (intranet, etc), but if you try to access an external page it won't be able to connect. This will be a kick to remind you that you shouldn't be going there in the first place. When you do need to access the internet, just go back and click the auto/manual that was originally set, and remember to unclick when you're done.

PS: Something like this (found by googling "limit internet access") might help, but check your company policies - most companies forbid the installation of "unknown" pieces of software. I haven't used this or heard anything about it, so I've no idea if it will make your machine blow up, or eat all the company data or anything. This one costs $15.
