Would you take one?

So tonight we had another nail biter of a peno shoot out. As a fan I could barely watch so can only imagine the butterflies in the stomach of the players involved.

Thinking about the great shoot outs of the past I'm wondering if you would have the balls to step up and take one if put in the situation.

Obviously the glory is there a la David O'Leary in Italia 90, but conversely you could end up doing a Gareth Southgate, Chris Waddle, Stuart Pearce, David Batty, <insert English player here>.

Personally I probably would. I have taken the last peno in a shoot out before, and scored, but they had one left after which they netted to send my team out. Horribly nervous even though there was only one man and his dog watching so I guess I might change my mind in front of 50,000 people.

Would you take one? First? Last?

I often think that the first is nearly as important as the last...it's important to start on the right note. For that reason I'd be reluctant to go first, or last.

If no one else volunteered I'd take one, and if I had my choice it'd be the second or third.

Not a nice way to finish games though.

Prefer to take one and miss than having to live with chickening out. If you're not in you can't win. That said, I would be bricking it no doubt.

If there were clearly no better penalty specialists ahead of me, I'd take the first peno.

    Not a hope in hell
I took one once and fell to the ground David O' Leary style....but in embarrassment cos I rattled the bar :o I suppose I would take the 6th one!

Its amazing how some just seem to walk up and rattle it in (ie Richard Dunne last nite) and others just go jelly-legged (Shevchenko CL final 2005)

Yea I would. At the end of the day I'd rather be the one in control than stand helplessly watching someone else do it. This can be especially bad if you have no faith in your team mates ability to score!

I took the last penalty in 3 different cup matches back at under 9's, and twice when I was 12! Our coach was ALWAYS sayin to us ..."Just pick where you're putting it and don't think about what the goalies doin. Strike it well and he probably won't save it anyway"....... I scored all 3. Of these, 2 were to win and 1 was to keep us in it (we lost). If you focus 100% on where you're gonna put the ball then the pressures not as severe. You beat yourself when you think of consequences.

I have never been bothered by taking peno's, been taking them ever since i started playing ball!

took one in a cup final once....was the closest i came to being nervous! but if its high and hard or low and hard the keeper doesnt really have a chance..... emphasise hard!

I've taken a good few penalties in my time. Never scored one in a shoot out though. Though we won one even though I missed. Scored every penalty I've taken in normal time bar one (last game last season with boards team, also broke wrist in game :D).

Only ever had 1 penalty shoot-out during my soccer-playing years - I was all set to take one but then I was subbed to get on an 'expert' from our first team just towards the end of extra time.

He missed, we lost and I swore that I'd make more of a fuss and insist on taking one if the opportunity ever cropped up again. Way I see it, I'd always slightly resent a teammate who'd missed so it's only fair that I'd take one too - can't have a double standard.

I think the history of penalty shoot-outs shows that practice has very little to do with it - the right temperament is far more important. The best penalty-takers in normal time can crumble, while the least technical players can do the job just by keeping their heads.

Ideally, I would take the No. 2 penalty. Also assuming I was one of the better penalty takers in the team. If there were 5 better penalty takers than me, who wanted to take one, I obviously wouldn't object.

I think taking the 1st penalty is the most important, much moreso than the last penalty.

Out of interest, if you select a player who is world class under pressure to take the 5th penalty (ie the final penalty), but it gets to a stage where you need to score your 3rd/4th penalty to win, can you select penalty taker number 5 to take this possible winning penalty or are you bound to your original selection?

Just do what James Corden did!

Anyway, penalties, I'd be bricking it, the thought of everyone watching you, you'll be a hero or not. I've taken a few, scored 5, missed 2.

In my younger days (not actually that long ago now that i think of it) at underage and senior level I took most of the set pieces and penalties. Had a pretty good conversion rate from the spot.. Think I only missed 1 from at least 15 penos (from play) over 4 or 5 seasons.

Only involved in 2 shoot-outs in that time and won on both occassions, scored both times as well.. thank god :p

It is really down to believing in yourself. If you know you can score or have the ability to score it is half the battle. The other half is all down to the time and the place... how you feel on the day and how you deal with pressure. I didn't let the pressure get to me. I kinda thrived on it..

Thinking of it, I'd love to get back into competitive football..... need to lose 2 stone though :-)

I think there's only one situation I might think twice about it but I would hope I would manage to clear the head would be

If Ireland somehow managed to get to the world cup final and I had to take the final kick

I'm not sure I could handle coming home if i missed.

Im bored so here is a story about my most memorable penalty shoot out ever

Always remember a penalty shoot out from a competition i played in Age 12. Me and a really good mate were captains of sides in a competition and both only barely eligable for the age group we were in so clearly the best players about, cept he had about 3 decent players with him and I only had 1 half decent player (who personality wise i didnt get on with).

Both teams got to the final my team named Nigeria for some reason and his Italia, thus we both got temp nicknames "Baggio" and "Jay Jay" (Okocha). Baggio scored an early goal and his side contained mine for the rest of the match until with about a minute to go i made a sliding tackle on baggio who stayed down, without him defending and despite the fact that I was almost on my own goal line I knew the goal was mine and ran the entire pitch and belted the ball full blast into the corner of the net before collapsing in exhaustion beside the corner flag.

Penalties: We were informed that we had only time for Pens as another game was due to start but that being a kiddies tournament every member of the team would have to take a penalty then we would add up the tallys to see who gets the lil trophys :D.

First Nigerean Pen (Me): eyes on the bottom right corner the whole time inc as i run up but i blast it into the top left corner and leave the keeper inside the wrong corner of the net.

First Italian Pen (Baggio): In my eyes a goal was a certainty here which is why i was shocked as he lived up to his moniker and blasted over... 1-0 after one and im sure were gonna win

2nd Nigerian Pen: My only other decent player steps up and misses with the worst pen ive ever seen... most would have got worried here, I was almost happy, no glory for that douche

    2nd Italien pen: Goal 1-1
    3rd Nigerian Pen: Miss 1-1
    3rd Italien Pen: Goal 1-2
    4th Nigerian Pen: Miss 1-2
    4th Italien Pen: Goal 1-3
    5th Nigerian Pen: Miss 1-3
    5th Italien Pen: Goal 1-4
    6th Nigerian Pen: Miss 1-4

    anyone noticing a pattern...

the shootout ended 10-1 to Italy, i was fkn miserable for ages afterwards :( sure was memorable though :D

I'd happily take a penalty, put me first or last its all good:) I have done it in the past without hesitation and put them in the net but once i get to that stage its all about winning, if i missed i wouldn't be unhappy with myself for taking it, i'd feel bad if the team did end up losing though...but the world turns life goes on, until the next time:pac:

Your best penalty taker should always go third. It's the first possible 'essential to score or you go out' one. So order of takers from best pen taker in the team to 5th best taker should probably be:

    no. 3
    no. 2
    no. 1
    no. 4
    no. 5

Frankly I'm surprised that teams rarely do this and that commentators etc. rarely mention it. Odds-wise, the 3rd one is the most important!

would definitely take one and would insist on being in the first three. Was the penalty taker for my team and one year we were knocked out of the national cup on penalties and I didn't get to take one because the gaffer wanted to keep me for the crucial fifth penalty. Never got that far.

Also once scored 3 penos in one match before and still lost
