SD advice?

Mate of mine was drunk recently in Abrakebabra on O'Connell St.. Was sitting on crapper when suddenly the door was kicked in and some guy demanded his money or else he would kill him. My mate was shocked and stunned, trousers around ankles and in no position to defend himself. Luckily he only had a tenner and handed it over. It was all over in seconds.

Is there anything he could have done?Or is this just one of those situations where he was just in wrong place at the wrong time?
Curious to hear SD type advice?

(Obviously no looking for " Don't get drunk and hang out in chippers" type advice)

regardless of what he could have or should have done, and nobody can say with any certainty what those are, its over now. Its vital that he not go over and over this in his head rebuking himself for inaction. If he finds himself thinking like that he should immediately squash it, tell himself he did the right thing forcefully and leave it alone.
Otherwise his confidence is going to start suffering over it, not worth it.

It's very easy to say, "I would have done this or that" in these situations. It's a lot harder to act when you are totally unprepared, and they have the element of surprise.

One thing crucial thing to have in any of these situations is "awareness".

Your mate was probably selected before he even went into the toilet. If your mate was "aware" of his surroundings, and who is in them (ie - that there were a few dodgey characters in Abrakastabra checking him out). He may have realized that something was not quite right, and left out going to the toilet (better still, leave the establishment). Or he could have brought a mate in with him to the toilet (not the same cubical of course) :). This would have made him a much harder target.

It's not your mates fault he got mugged, these guys are career criminals, and know what they are doing. They were employing sound ambush tactics. But your mate only lost a tenner, and had his ego dented. He's safe, and that's the main thing. It could have been so much worse. He could have been hospitalized, stabbed or god knows what.

If your aware or "switched on", the criminals will pick up on this, and you will be less likely to be selected as a target. After all, these scumbags want the path of least resistance. So they will select the next easiest target.

On the plus side... he'll be lot more careful in future. So he's actually got something positive from such a horrible experience.

He was caught and did the right thing handing over the tenner.

Exactly. What the feck like.....you're cornered and your trousers are around your ankles.....you haven't a chance. A tenner well spent.

One should always check one's six before sitting on the toilet, obviously.
