What is nursing like as a career? Are there any nurses here on boards?

I have always wanted to do veterinary nursing but i need to be employed with a vet and have a year's experience before applying. And im just not getting anything.
So im looking into nursing. People are just like animals. Just a different species though.

You are right, people ARE animals. Bipedal mammals.

The difference is that people have imaginations and can talk. They can imagine all sorts of things! Pain for example. A dog having a leg amputated has a very different attitude to a person having a amputated!

Anyway. I used to be a general nurse for a few years. I loved it but found it very physically demanding - even though I was young, fit and healthy. Have you looked at any jobs as nurses aide?

There an enormous variety of jobs taht you can get in nursing or related to nursing when you qualify.

As far as promotion is concerned there are 3 routes to promotion: Clinical nursing, Nursing Management, and Nurse Education. I may be out of date on this...

If you leave nursing entirely, your training will still stand to you. You'll have well developed people skills and you'll be good at handling stressful situations.

hey Lisajane just saw this actually.

maybe i'd suggest something similar to JC and go get some experience in say a nursing home or a hospital as a care assistant before you take the plunge.

Veterinary nursing and people nursing are very very different. the studying needed etc is also very different. It takes a bit more than being a people person and wanting to get into veterinary nursing to get through the 4 years for a nursing degree.

saying that though a good resource is the Irish Nursing Board which has a careers advice section on the site. Feel free though to ask any questions you have and we'll see if we can answer them.........help bring you over to the dark side......

    hi lisajane,

im a student nurse in NUIG, currently in 2nd year. i always wanted to do veterinary to but the high points made it difficult! i'd advise you to get work experience as a health care assistant before taking the plunge also. maybe not in a nursing home though... im on placement in a nursing home at the mo and its very different to general, alot of manual handling is involved and its very hard going.

nursing is very rewarding work and i'd recommend it, but like i said, im just in 2nd year so dont have much experience!

best of luck whatever you decide!
