"The United Nations hosted the cast and crew of Battlestar Galactica Tuesday evening in New York. Clips of the show were shown as discussion points during the event, touching on the morality of Suicide Bombers in war, Abortion and the use of torture on enemies of the state.

At one point during the event an attendee mentions 'the "Old Man" launched into a passionate speech about casting off the idea of race as a cultural determinant, and said we were one race, the human race. His voice echoed throughout the chamber growing louder until — I kid you not — he was yelling, "So Say We All," and the crowd answered right back. Hell, even I yelled it, I was in the fraking United Nations with Adama, the gods themselves could not have stopped this moment.' The full video of the event is located on the UN website."

I would have given my left index finger to have been there!!

Because this was a case of a big, proto-United Earth government not plotting behind closed doors and/or covering up the existence of aliens?

I watched some of this live on the UN webcast on Tuesday night. BSG's connection to most of the issues was quite tenuous tbh. But the event was obviously more about trying to introduce fans of the show to UN issues.

Eddie is crazy but it's hard not to love him. He went into an insane spiel at the end about how amazing the show was. Some of the UN reps looked a bit intimated by him but McDonnel was just laughing through the whole thing.

Well, I think the opposite is true.

The UN used the themes already introduced in the show to further its own issues. Battlestar has always been a deeply social show, and more effective at it than just about any conventional drama.

I'm sure it's part of the UN's policy to try and pick up on popular clture that pings with it so it can get it's message out more effectively by riding the back of something that appeals to people who otherwise would have little interest in the UN.
